In the lead up to his highly anticipated octagon return against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, Conor McGregor stated that he would be interested in a future fight with former middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva. “You know what would be another great one? Anderson Silva.” Conor McGregor told ESPN when asked about potential future opponents.“I would be interested in an Anderson Silva bout. I swear to God. Anderson is a legend in the game. What’s the difference between him and Georges? Same damn thing. I’m going to do fights that interest me or have meaning.”

Speaking on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show this week, former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor discussed what might be next if he gets by reigning lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 229 this weekend. Among the possibilities Conor McGregor mentioned were Dustin Poirier, Nate Diaz, Tyron Woodley, and Georges St-Pierre. Easily the most surprising of the bunch, however, was former UFC middleweight champion and occasional light heavyweight Anderson Silva.

Yesterday, we learned that the United States Anti-Doping Agency had determined that Anderson Silva’s recent failed drug test had been due to a tainted supplement, and that he’d been handed a one-year suspension for his ingesting this supplement. This suspension is retroactive to October, 2017, which means Silva will be able to fight again this October. As always, Silva will have plenty of interesting options in terms of opponents for his anticipated return to the cage. Perhaps the most compelling option of all, of course, would be his long-time rival Georges St-Pierre.

The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has determined that his failed drug test was due to a contaminated substance. As a result, he’s been handed a one-year suspension, retroactive to October 2017. This means he’ll be eligible to fight again this October. This news comes from Ariel Helwani of ESPN.

Though former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is currently embroiled in an ugly scandal stemming from a failed drug test, he’s not willing to close the door on his fighting career completely. Even though there is a legitimate chance he could be sidelined with a lengthy suspension as a result of this latest steroid-related SNAFU, he still envisions a future where he could fight for again. He even believes he could fight for the title again one day. “I’m happy with everything that I’ve conquered,” Silva told Globo Esporte in a recent interview (via Bloody Elbow). “Nothing is forever. I still have my UFC contract and I’m very happy with it. Only time will tell what’s next. I’m feeling well, I train everyday, I’m a healthy guy. Waiting is all there is to it. I’m still alive in the division and there may be a chance to fight for the title again.”

As the UFC and combat sports in general rockets into the future. It’s more important than ever to preserve the history of these fights so they aren’t lost in time. New fans are constantly pouring in an cycled through generations, then separated into eras. There are the group of people who became fans after the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, then there are fans who were drawn to the sport like moths from the bright lights of Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor. No matter when someone got into the chaotic spectacle of MMA, researching everything they can about Anderson Silva is a mandatory homework assignment. The build up going into this fight appeared to be animosity free. But that quickly changed at the weigh ins.
