Alexander Volkanovski’s team shuts down ‘barking dog’ Jean Silva getting the next UFC title shot

It’s safe to say that UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and his team have zero interest in fighting Jean Silva next.

Undefeated UFC featherweight contender Movsar Evloev made a strong case for a title shot with a majority decision win over Lerone Murphy at UFC London earlier this month. UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski seems keen on fighting Evloev next, but it remains uncertain whether or not Evloev will get the next title shot after a delayed process throughout his career.

In the meantime, UFC star Jean Silva claimed he was recently in talks with the matchmakers to fight Volkanovski later this year, despite being one fight removed from a dominant loss to Diego Lopes. Silva returned to the win column with an impressive performance against Arnold Allen at UFC 324.

Amidst the ongoing debate regarding who deserves the next UFC featherweight title shot, Volkanovski’s team shared a clear stance on the state of the division.

In a recent interview with Submission Radio, Volkanovski’s longtime coach Joe Lopez blasted Silva’s comments about a title shot.

“Jean Silva or whatever his name is, barking like the little dog that he is in the background, trying to make a lot of noise to make himself think he’s the next one,” Volkanovski’s coach Lopez said of Silva.

“But he’s not deserving. There are still Aljo and guys above him. He’s got to earn his spot. Don’t think that because you make a lot of noise, you’re going to get it, because you’re not.” (h/t Bloody Elbow)

Volkanovski most recently defeated Lopes in their UFC 325 rematch by unanimous decision. The two-time champion envisons a return to the Octagon later this year, potentially against Evloev.

UFC CEO Dana White remains vague on who deserves the next featherweight title shot, despite glowing remarks about Evloev’s recent performance in London. But if Silva is offered to Volkanovski next, it’s safe to say that the champion and their team won’t sign off on it willingly.
