‘WSOF 17’ Recap: Shields Earns Title Shot Against Palhares with 1st Round Win

“World Series of Fighting 17” kicked off a bit slow with three decisions in a row, but Jake Shields and Joe Condon brought the crowd to life with their impressive submission victories!

Joe Condon def. Johnny Nunez by way of Submission (Guillotine) 4:22 of Round 3

Joe Condon looked to be on the losing side of a decision with Johnny Nunez. Condon knew he was going to lose if the fight made it to the judges’ scorecard, so he fought a scrappy third round and eventually found himself in position to lock up the win with a guillotine choke. Nunez left his neck exposed with a minute remaining and Condon jumped on it. He took the guillotine to the ground and it looked like Nunez was in a mixture of a guillotine crank and choke! Nunez tried to escape but eventually tapped out, only to pass out as soon as Condon let go of the hold.

Condon stepped in for an injured Brian Cobb who injured himself a day before the fights took place.

Jake Shields def. Brian Foster by way of Submission (Rear Naked Choke) 2:51 of Round 1

Jake Shields made quick work of Brian Foster by making him submit to the rear naked choke in less than five minutes. Shields took Foster down and easily gained full mount. After Shields threatened a head-arm choke, Foster chose to give up his back against the jiu-jitsu ace. Shields saw neck and leapt on it, trapping Foster in a rear naked choke. Instead of wrapping his forearm under the neck of Foster, Shields wrapped his forearm around Foster’s chin and drove it back.

Foster knew he was not going anywhere and chose to submit rather than pass out. Jake Shields will face Rousimar Palhares for the WSOF Welterweight Championship in the near future.
