The Octagon touched down in Kansas for the first time on Saturday night, returning to our screens with UFC Wichita. The main event of the card was an important heavyweight fight.
Ultimately, Junior dos Santos beat Derrick Lewis by TKO in the second round to become a top contender in the heavyweight division. Although Daniel Cormier has been eyeing a fight with Brock Lesnar, the question is, did dos Santos do enough to get the next shot?
Here is what we think should be next for Junior dos Santos and Derrick Lewis.
Junior dos Santos
Junior dos Santos is now on a three-fight winning streak after his impressive performance in Wichita. The former champion entered the fight ranked eight in the heavyweight division and will now surely climb into the top-five if not the top-three.
Although dos Santos has been campaigning for a fight against Cormier, the fight that makes sense for him is taking on Francis Ngannou in a number one contender fight. The two were supposed to fight at UFC 215, however dos Santos was pulled from the card for a potential USADA violation (he was later cleared of wrongdoing). The two can finally square off and decide which fighter will be getting the next title shot.
All of the sudden Derrick Lewis has lost two fights in a row. Lewis has had a hectic few months which saw him score a last-second knockout of Alexander Volkov to then fight Cormier for the title.
Ultimately, Lewis will be forced back to the drawing board to see what is next. A logical next fight would be against Cain Velasquez.
Velasquez will be out for a while with the knee injury, and Lewis has said he has wanted time off since his win at UFC 229. With this fight, Lewis can take a few months off and fight Velasquez sometime in the late summer or fall.
Lewis has fought most of the fighters inside the top-10 and frankly, doesn’t deserve to fight anyone outside of it. This way he gets a chance to rebound and gets another big name to fight.
