After UFC Argentina win, Cynthia Calvillo hopes to settle ‘unfinished business’ with Michelle Waterson

Cynthia Calvillo has not had a particularly easy year. After experiencing her first professional loss, a decision defeat to Carla Esparza, in late 2017, she tested positive for marijuana metabolites and was suspended for 9 months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Last weekend, however, on the main card of UFC Argentina, the rising prospect finally got back in the cage, where she rebounded from her loss to Esparza with a first-round submission defeat of Brazil’s Poliana Botelho.

While Cynthia Calvillo missed weight for this bout with Botelho, she was understandably thrilled to get back to winning ways. And now that she’s done so, she’s eager to take another big step in the direction of a strawweight title shot by fighting long-time contender Michelle Waterson.

Speaking after her UFC Argentina submission win, Cynthia Calvillo divulged that she feels she has ‘unfinished business’ with Michelle Waterson, having briefly been linked to a fight with her before she was suspended.

“I have some unfinished business,” Calvillo said (transcript via MMAjunkie). “I signed a contract earlier this year to fight ‘Karate Hottie.’ I hope she will follow through with that, as well. I had the contract before my suspension. Hopefully, we can run that back and get that finished.”

Whoever she fights next, however, Cynthia Calvillo is just happy to be competing again.

“I was heartbroken all year long,” she said. “I’m finally back at home.”

Prior to her defeat of Botelho and her loss to Esparza, Calvillo was a perfect 6-0 as a pro. She won her first three bouts in the Octagon, defeating Amanda Bobby Cooper, Pearl Gonzales and Joanne Calderwood.
