UFC 229 weigh in results: Khabib Nurmagomedov, Conor McGregor hit their marks (video)

Tom Taylor - October 5, 2018

On Saturday night, the UFC will return to Las Vegas, Nevada’s T-Mobile Arena with arguably its biggest card ever: UFC 229. The reason this card is so massive, of course, is primarily due to its main event, which will pit undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov against former lightweight and featherweight champ and all-around MMA superstar Conor McGregor.

Conor McGregor says he could make $50 million for UFC 229 fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov

Cole Shelton - October 4, 2018

Everyone knows Conor McGregor made a ton of money in his last fight. His last fight, however, was not in the Octagon, rather in a boxing ring against Floyd Mayweather. Boxers typically make more money than mixed martial artists, but that is slowly changing. The UFC superstar McGregor claims he will be making around $50 million for his Saturday night fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

EXCLUSIVE | Anthony 'Lionheart' Smith talks Volkan Oezdemir, new weight class, and Jon Jones

Mike Straus - October 4, 2018

Perhaps no fighter is a better example of what fighting at a more natural weight class can do for your fighting career than Anthony ‘Lionheart’ Smith. Smith has had a career rebirth so to speak this year. The 30-year-old fighter from Omaha, Nebraska has typically been a middleweight fighter in his career. Lately, however, Smith has decided that cutting down to 185 pounds and then ballooning back up to 230 pounds just isn’t worth it anymore. Let alone the damage that does to your body.

Poland’s most accomplished mixed martial artist of all time also happens to be one of MMA’s most accomplished champions of all time. That, of course, is none other than the former strawweight queen Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Jedrzejczyk entered the UFC as an undefeated 6-0 rising contender in 2014 who was fresh off a big second-round knockout over the experienced Rosi Sexton.

Conor McGregor responds to comparisons to Muhammad Ali

Tom Taylor - October 4, 2018

Former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor has been compared to late boxing legend Muhammad Ali at several points over the course of his career, most notably by UFC President Dana White. These comparisons are generally based on McGregor’s confidence, showmanship and proficiency at mental warfare — traits Ali was famous for. “I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: He’s better [at mental warfare] than anybody,” Dana White told the media of McGregor shortly after the first press conference for UFC 229 (via MMAjunkie). “Even Ali. You don’t want to say anybody’s better than Ali, but I think when it comes to the mental war game in this sport, or any other sport, Conor McGregor is the best ever.”

Dana White explains why he's opposed to introduction of a 165-pound division

Tom Taylor - October 4, 2018

Over the last few weeks, a seemingly endless list of fighters have called for the UFC to abolish the traditional 170-pound welterweight division and replace it with new 165-pound and 175-pound divisions. There was even buzz about the possibility of Nate Diaz and Dustin Poirier battling for the inaugural 165-pound title in the UFC 230 main event this November 3. While this seems like a great idea in theory, however, UFC President Dana White isn’t interested. He explained why in a recent interview with ESPN.

UFC President Dana White explains why Conor McGregor is such a huge star

Tom Taylor - October 4, 2018

Former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor, who will attempt to reclaim that latter title from Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 229 this Saturday, is far and away the biggest star in UFC history. But why is that? According to UFC President Dana White, there is a multitude of reasons. The simplest, though, is that Conor McGregor is a real fighter.

Conor McGregor reacts to video of young Khabib Nurmagomedov wrestling a bear

Tom Taylor - October 4, 2018

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is a scary opponent for a number of reasons. There’s his flawless, 26-0 record. There’s his stifling top game and the fact that he often talks to his opponents while he’s burying them under a meteor shower of ground and pound. And then there’s the fact that he wrestled a bear when he was a child. No, that’s not just some fabricated part of the Khabib Nurmagomedov legend, it’s a real thing that actually happened. There’s video to prove it.

Conor McGregor hopes to rematch Nate Diaz for 165-pound title

Tom Taylor - October 4, 2018

Conor McGregor feels he owes Nate Diaz a rematch. No matter the outcome of his UFC 229 title fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov, the Irish superstar seems determined to give Diaz that rematch, the same way Diaz gave him the opportunity. In fact, McGregor feels that his rematch with Diaz could serve as the inaugural title fight for a yet-hypothetical 165-pound division — something Diaz has been very vocal about himself.

At UFC 229, everyone is focusing on the main event. Current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov will be taking on former two-division champion Conor McGregor. The fight is talked about as the biggest in UFC history, and rightfully so. However, the co-main event between Tony Ferguson and Anthony Pettis has a storyline of its own. Ferguson is the former interim lightweight champion who was supposed to take on Nurmagomedov at UFC 223, before withdrawing due to injury. While Pettis is the former UFC lightweight champion.

It’s been a wild ride, and now in the wake of UFC 230’s main event announcement, the MMA world has been very, very upset to say the least. That’s not to say that everyone is upset though, those being the members of the flyweight division in particular.

Tony Ferguson opens up on being stripped of interim title, still considers himself the champ

In October of 2017, Tony Ferguson captured the interim lightweight title with a submission defeat of Kevin Lee. In April of 2018, he was scheduled to fight top contender Khabib Nurmagomedov in a bout that would crown the winner the undisputed lightweight champion. Unfortunately, Tony Ferguson was forced out of this fight with a freak injury. Khabib Nurmagomedov wound up defeating short-notice replacement opponent Al Iaquinta to win the undisputed title, while Ferguson was quietly stripped of his interim title.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk issues lengthy statement on cancelled fight with Shevchenko: 'I feel truly resentful'

Tom Taylor - October 3, 2018

Former UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk was expected to fight Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant women’s flyweight title at UFC 231 this December 8 in Toronto. Unfortunately for her, this matchup was nixed not longer after it was announced, as Shevchenko was plucked from UFC 231 and redistributed to a UFC 230 main event title fight with Sijara Eubanks. It should come as no surprise that Joanna Jedrzejczyk is quite disappointed with this turn of events. Yet having learned of her title fight’s cancellation through the media rather than through UFC officials, she’s even more disappointed than she would have been otherwise.
