Khabib Nurmagomedov reacts to teammates getting reduced suspensions

By Tom Taylor - May 22, 2019

This afternoon, the Nevada State Athletic Commission decided to reduce the year-long suspensions of Zubaira Tukhugov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov by 35 days, meaning both men will be able to fight again as of September 2, rather than October 6. This is important news, as UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov previously vowed not to fight until both men were eligible to compete again, which represented an obstacle as the UFC attempted to schedule him for a fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 on September 7 in Abu Dhabi.

With the NSAC’s new ruling, of course, Khabib Nurmagomedov is clear to fight at UFC 242 without breaking his promise. Zubaira Tukhugov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov are also now in a position to join Khabib on the UFC 242 bill.

Unsurprisingly, Khabib Nurmagomedov is quite happy about this news, and about potentially fighting on the same card as his teammates. Shortly after the news of the NSAC’s decision surfaced, the lightweight champ took to Instagram where he issued a quick statement.

“OFFICIAL❗️The Nevada State Athletic Commission issued a verdict on the @zubairatukhugov and @abubakar_nurmagomedov case. The commission reduced the removal of fighters by 35 days, so Zubayra and Abubakar can fight on # UFC242 in Abu Dhabi!
We are ready and we coming InshaAllah.
DreamTeam and real Family” – Khabib Nurmagomedov on Instagram.

Ali Abdelaziz, who serves as the manager for all three fighters, also commented on this development.

“It’s been a rough process that cost us a lot of money and time,” he told MMA Junkie. “I’m glad it’s over. Now Abubakar and Zubaira can get back to do what they love to do and pursue their dreams.

“I want to thank Mr. Hunter Campbell for his help throughout the process. Without him this couldn’t happen.”

Stay tuned for further updates on Khabib Nurmagomedov, Abubakar Nurmagomedov, Zubaira Tukhugov and the larger UFC 242 card as details emerge.
