Jon Jones still interested in ‘big money fight’ with Brock Lesnar

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones says he’s still interested in fighting former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in the future. He considers this fight a win-win for all parties involved.

“Fighting Brock Lesnar is aways appealing,” Jones said on the UFC 232 conference call last week (transcript via MMA Fighting). “That’s a win-win situation. That’s a huge money fight and that’s me fighting a guy who’s a hell of a lot bigger than me and everyone wins in that situation.

“I win because of the courage it takes to step in there against a guy who’s way bigger than you, I win because of the pay-per-view that will follow, the fans will win,” he added. “It would be great for the sport and it’d be good for everyone involved. So I’m totally up for that.”

Jon Jones began to call for a fight with Brock Lesnar ahead of his UFC 214 fight with Daniel Cormier. When Jones defeated Cormier by knockout, he made another callout of the former UFC heavyweight champ.

“Brock Lesnar, you want to know what it feels like to get your ass kicked by someone 40 pounds lighter? Meet me in the Octagon,” he said.

In the end, of course, it was revealed that Jon Jones had failed a pre-fight drug test, which meant that his win over Cormier was overturned. This development threw a wrench into his plans to fight Lesnar.

Jones will fight for the first time since his no-contest with Cormier this weekend, in the main event of the chaos-riddled UFC 232 card, where he will fight Alexander Gustafsson.

The card was originally expected to occur in Las Vegas. When a Jon Jones drug test detected a small amount of turinabol, however, the Nevada Athletic Commission decided against licensing him. This caused the UFC to move the entire card from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, California — to the ire of the thousands of fans who bought tickets, flights and hotels to see the card in Sin City.
