Ever since UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 229 earlier this month, there’s been talk of a potential rematch between the two stars. That being said, UFC President Dana White claims this is not the current plan. “I haven’t even thought about a [McGregor] rematch,” White told ESPN. “Obviously, I know Conor wants a rematch. We need to do what’s right and what’s fair. We’ll see how it plays out. We literally haven’t thought about it yet.”

On Saturday night, in the co-main event of UFC 229, former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson made a successful return to action after a long layoff, picking up an impressive win over the former champion Anthony Pettis. Not long thereafter, in the card’s main event, UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Conor McGregor to retain his title. Shortly after Nurmagomedov bested McGregor, the pair’s team engaged in a wild brawl inside and outside of the Octagon. Having witnessed this chaotic and unsportsmanlike scene, Tony Ferguson believes that neither Nurmagomedov nor McGregor is deserving of the UFC lightweight belt. In his opinion, he himself is the true lightweight champ.

Although Anthony Pettis was able to drop Tony Ferguson at one point in the fight, his corner stopped the action between the second and third rounds as he had broken his hand.

Unfortunately, Tony Ferguson was forced out of this fight with a freak injury. Khabib Nurmagomedov wound up defeating short-notice replacement opponent Al Iaquinta to win the undisputed title, while Ferguson was quietly stripped of his interim title.

Over the weekend, it was confirmed that UFC 229 will be co-headlined by a key lightweight contender bout between former interim champion Tony Ferguson and former undisputed champion Anthony Pettis. Ferguson and Pettis are also likely to serve as understudies should Khabib Nurmagomedov or Conor McGregor fail to appear for the card’s main event. From the sounds of it, this fight with Pettis is one that Tony Ferguson has wanted for some time. Speaking in a lengthy post on Instagram, Ferguson recounted a run-in with Pettis’ team that occurred all the way back at UFC 181. Apparently, he now plans to “bring the pain” to Pettis — although he’s willing to fight like a gentleman if Pettis issues a public apology ahead of time.

According to Ariel Helwani, Al Iaquinta is now healthier than he’s been in some time, and he’s keen to return to the cage soon. More specifically, he’d like to fight this November against former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson, who he apparently “can’t stand.”

If things had gone according to the initial plan, Tony Ferguson would have battled Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight title at UFC 223. Regrettably, Ferguson sustained a knee injury just six days before the April 7 bout, and was forced out of the fight as a result. Nurmagomedov then defeated late-replacement Al Iaquinta to earn the lightweight belt, while Ferguson headed to the operating room for knee surgery. With his surgery in the rear-view, Ferguson is hoping for a quick and uncomplicated recovery.

One of the topics of conversation was Tony Ferguson, who Lee lost to in an interim title bout in October of 2017. Ferguson was recently supposed to battle Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight title at UFC 223, but was unfortunately forced out of the fight with a freak leg injury just a week ahead of the event. Ferguson then went under the knife to repair this injury, and is currently recovering from surgery.

Nurmagomedov won this fight by unanimous decision. Since then, Ferguson has sought to discredit Nurmagomedov’s title win on the basis that it came against the UFC’s 11th-ranked lightweight on only one day’s notice. And now, Iaquinta has intervened.
