Tom Taylor - September 17, 2017

Dangerous Brazilian middleweight contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza has not been seen in the cage since April, when he was smashed to a second round TKO by new UFC interim middleweight champion Robert Whittaker. While nothing is official just yet, it sounds like that could change very soon. "Jacare" Souza makes his prediction for Romero vs. Whittaker

Tom Taylor - July 2, 2017

This Saturday, in the co-main event of UFC 213, surging Cuban contender Yoel Romero will collide with Kiwi standout Robert Whittaker for the interim UFC middleweight title. Brazil’s Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza – who has long stood out as one of the best middleweights on earth – is one of just a few men to fight both Romero and Whittaker. As such, his thoughts on this fight are particularly interesting. “I think Romero wins this fight,” Souza told MMAFighting.com. “He’s stronger, keeps the distance well and is really calm. Robert Whittaker can surprise him and win because he’s really fast for the middleweight division, but I bet on Romero.”

Jacare Souza reflects on loss to Robert Whittaker

bjpenndotcom - June 29, 2017

Back in April, top ranked middleweight Jacare Souza stepped into the Octagon with Robert Whittaker for a highly anticipated middleweight showdown. Unfortunately for Jacare, who was ranked higher than Whittaker going into the fight, he lost the scrap via TKO, snapping a 2-fight win streak. Now, with Jacare ranked at #5 on the UFC’s middleweight rankings, and Whittaker set to fight Yoel Romero for the interim middleweight title this summer, Jacare spoke to Combate to reflect on his fight with ‘The Reaper’:

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza relocates to Florida, gives timeframe for Octagon return

Tom Taylor - June 21, 2017

Back in April, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza put his status as one of the top middleweight contenders on the line against the young Robert Whitaker. Unfortunately, this bet didn’t pay off for Jacare, as he wilted under a storm of second-round strikes. Now several months removed from this loss, Jacare is seeking a change of scenery. He has departed from his native Brazil and relocated to Winter Park, Florida. Though this corner of The Sunshine State is not far from American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Jacare assures he won’t be training at the renowned gym.

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza releases statement after TKO loss

Tom Taylor - April 16, 2017

On Friday night, Brazilian grappling sensation Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza was one of the hottest contenders in the middleweight division, and one of the most deserving men of a shot at Michael Bisping’s middleweight title. On Saturday night, he was dropped by a second-round Robert Whittaker head-kick, and polished off by a meteor shower of ground strikes. Things change awfully quickly in mixed martial arts. Shortly after this upset loss to Whittaker – which marks his first stoppage loss since a 2008 up-kick induced knockout dealt by Gegard Mousasi – Jacare took to Instagram to issue a short statement on his situation.

This weekend, when the UFC returns to Fox, streaking Brazilian middleweight contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza will look to follow in Mousasi’s footsteps, closing out his current contract with a win over the dangerous Robert Whittaker.

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza will happily retire if he gets tired of waiting for title shot

Tom Taylor - March 20, 2017

The news that the next crack at Michael Bisping’s middleweight title will go to returning welterweight legend Georges St-Pierre – who has never fought at middleweight before – was most troubling for two men in particular: Yoel Romero and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. With Octagon records of 8-0 and 7-1 respectively, Romero and Jacare are far and away the top contenders in the UFC middleweight division, and are both very much deserving of the opportunity to fight for gold. Yet with the news of this Bisping vs. St-Pierre bout, both of their title shots were pushed back on the schedule.

Robert Whittaker discusses 'Jacare' booking and the challenges of the matchup

Tom Taylor - March 12, 2017

Earlier this month, we learned that elite middleweight contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza will be returning to the Octagon at UFC on Fox 24 on April 15. The Brazilian grappling specialist will do so against rising Australian contender Robert Whittaker, who recently rocketed into the upper echelon of the division with a dazzling knockout defeat of the dangerous Derek Brunson. While this matchup is an undeniably exciting one, its announcement did catch some fans by surprise. Jacare, after all, is one of the very top contenders in the middleweight division. Though the next middleweight title shot will go to returning former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, Jacare could have easily opted to wait for his shot or, to rematch fellow contender Yoel Romero in an effort to lock down the number-one-contender spot. Instead, the Brazilian has chosen to keep a busy schedule, risking his hard-earned contender status against a ferocious young talent in Whittaker.

Jacare Souza goes off on Michael Bisping and Luke Rockhold

bjpenndotcom - March 8, 2017

Top ranked UFC middleweight contender Ronaldo Jacare Souza has been on a tear of the UFC’s middleweight division. With a controversial split decision loss to Yoel Romero being the only mark on his otherwise unblemished record, Souza remains one of the most lethal contenders at 185 pounds. While Souza is currently set to fight Robert Whittaker on April 15th, it wasn’t that long ago that Souza was set to fight former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold in the main event of ‘UFC Fight Night: Melbourne’. Unfortunately, Rockhold withdrew from that fight, and Souza was left without an opponent. With that being said, ‘Jacare’ was able to close out 2016 with a win as he submitted Tim Boetsch in the very first round.

Jacare Souza goes OFF on 'stupid' Michael Bisping

bjpenndotcom - February 22, 2017

By now, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping is no stranger to being called out by his fellow middleweights. Since winning the title in June of 2016 by knocking out Luke Rockhold on just two weeks notice, the champ has repeatedly found himself called out by the middleweight division’s top contenders, including Yoel Romero, Jacare Souza, and Anderson Silva to name just a few.

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza doesn't plan to wait for Bisping, targets rematch with Romero

Tom Taylor - February 13, 2017

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza has long stood out as one of the top contenders in the middleweight division, and as a man very much deserving of a title shot. Unfortunately for him, that shot has yet to materialize. While it’s possible that the Brazilian grappling whiz might receive his long-awaited shot if he simply hung tight and waited for his chance, this is simply not his style. It is for this reason that he accepted a fight with the division’s 14th ranked fighter Tim Boetsch, who he tapped with a first-round kimura on the main card of last weekend’s UFC 208. It’s for that same reason that he’s willing to accept another fight in the meantime, if a title fight with Michael Bisping is not what’s offered to him next.
