Whittaker (24-7 MMA) will enter the contest looking to rebound, this after suffering a TKO loss to Dricus Du Plessis in his most previous effort at UFC 290. Prior to that setback, the former middleweight champion was coming off a unanimous decision victory over Marvin Vettori in September of 2022.

Meanwhile, Paulo Costa (14-2 MMA) will be returning to action for the first time since scoring a unanimous decision win over Luke Rockhold at UFC 278 in August of 2022. ‘Borrachinha’ was supposed to fight Khamzat Chimaev at last fall’s UFC 294 event in Abu Dhabu but was ultimately forced out of that bout due to injury.

Round one of the UFC 298 co-main event begins and Robert Whittaker lands a low kick to start. Paulo Costa with a jab. ‘The Reaper’ with another solid low kick. He lands another. Costa returns fire with one of his own. He goes upstairs with a high kick. Good shots from both men in the pocket. Whittaker with another good low kick. Costa goes upstairs with a high kick that partially connects. Both men with good jabs. Whittaker lands another low kick. Costa comes over the top with a right hand. ‘The Reaper’ with a nice counter right. He follows that up with a good jab. Costa answers with one of his own. A good 1-2 lands for Whittaker. He lands another hard low kick to the lead leg of the Brazilian. Robert Whittaker doubles up on his jab. He lands another good low kick and then follows that up with a 1-2. Paulo Costa responds with a jab. Whittaker returns fire and lands a crisp counter right. Costa goes to the body, but Whittaker counters with a sharp right. Paulo Costa lands a big spinning heel kick. That wobbles the former champ. Whittaker stays on his feet and survives to hear the horn.

Round two of the UFC 298 co-main event begins and Robert Whittaker appears to have recovered. He lands a nice head kick, but Costa eats it and smiles. Good low kicks from the former champ. Paulo Costa lands a hard jab. A thumb to the eye causes a brief stoppage. We restart and Whittaker lands a good combination. He comes over the top with a big left. Costa swings and misses with a left. Whittaker lands another chopping low kick. Paulo comes in with a left hand and then a combination to the body. Robert Whittaker with a good left hand and then another low kick. Three minutes remain. Another chopping low kick from ‘The Reaper’. Costa replies with one of his own. Whittaker with a double jab. Costa goes to the body with a kick. A nice left from the former middleweight champion. Costa responds with a jab. He lands another. Whittaker answers with a straight left. A good kick from Costa, but Whittaker counters with a pair of punches. One minute remains in the fight. Whittaker with a good left. Good low kicks from both men. Whittaker answers with a left hand. He continues to be first in the late stages of the round. Costa with a high kick. Whittaker looks for a takedown. The horn sounds to end the fight.
