UFC 299 Results: Mateusz Gamrot defeats Rafael dos Anjos (Highlights)

Dos Anjos (32-15 MMA) will be returning to the lightweight division he once ruled with hopes of rebounding from a unanimous decision loss to Vicente Luque this past August at welterweight. The former lightweight kingpin has gone 3-2 over his past five Octagon appearances, scoring wins over Paul Felder, Renato Moicano and Bryan Barberena during the stretch.

Meanwhile, Mateusz Gamrot (23-2 MMA) will enter the contest on a two-fight winning streak, his most recent being a TKO victory over Rafael Fiziev this past September. ‘Gamer’ has gone 6-2 since joining the UFC ranks in October of 2020.

Round one of this lightweight matchup begins and Mateusz Gamrot comes forward with a left hand and then a high kick. A good right hand up the middle from ‘Gamer’. Rafael dos Anjos come forward and lands a big knee. That hurt Gamrot who immediately shoots for a takedown. ‘RDA’ defends and then rocks his opponent with a big punch. Gamrot recovers and forces the standing clinch. He eventually breaks free and gets back to range. Dos Anjos with a nice kick to the body. He steps in with a left hand that connects. Gamrot still appears to be a bit shaky early. Mateusz Gamrot shoots for a takedown and gets it. Two minutes remain in the opening round. The former KSW champ is looking to posture up and land some ground and pound, but ‘RDA’ is doing a good job of defending. Gamrot passes to half guard but continues to struggle to get off punches. He lands a decent left hand to close out round one.

Round two of this lightweight matchup begins and Mateusz Gamrot quickly shoots in for a takedown attempt. Rafael dos Anjos defends, but ‘Gamer’ is on his back and has him pressed against the cage. Gamrot with a trip takedown, but ‘RDA’ pops right back up to his feet. The fighters continue to battle in the clinch. Gamrot with a couple of knees and then they break. Dos Anjos leaps in with a body shot. Gamrot immediately shoots for a takedown and once again presses ‘RDA’ back against the cage. Mateusz drags Rafael to the floor, but the former lightweight champ quickly scrambles back up to his feet. Rafael dos Anjos with a nice elbow on the break. Mateusz Gamrot shoots in for another takedown and gets it. He has just over a minute to work from this position. Rafael dos Anjos scrambles up to his feet, but ‘Gamer’ still has him pressed up against the cage. ‘RDA’ eventually breaks free and looks to setup a combination. A good jab from Gamrot, but Dos Anjos claps back with a three-punch combination. The horn sounds to end round two.

The third and final round of this lightweight bout begins and Mateusz Gamrot lands a nice body shot to start. ‘RDA’ with an inside low kick. ‘Gamer’ counters with a nice straight right up the middle. Rafael dos Anjos swings and misses, which allows Gamrot to score another takedown. The former champ quickly scrambles and is able to get back to his feet. ‘RDA’ applying a lot of presure now, but that allows ‘Gamer’ to get in on another takedown attempt. The Brazilian eventually breaks free and gets back to range. Dos Anjos with a low kick. Gamrot shoots in but eats a hard elbow for his efforts. Rafael dos Anjos breaks free and then comes forward with a flurry. Mateusz Gamrot avoids and then shoots in and forces the clinch. ‘RDA’ breaks free but will likely need a finish in the final 30 seconds here to get the win. Gamrot with a good 1-2. He lands a stiff jab and the horn sounds to end the contest.
