Kamaru Usman won’t commit to weight class following UFC OKC loss against Dricus du Plessis

Kamaru Usman isn’t sure which division his next fight will be contested at following a loss at UFC Oklahoma.

Usman and former UFC Middleweight Champion Dricus du Plessis collided in the main event of Saturday’s “Fight Night” card inside Paycom Center. The bout was contested at 185 pounds. Usman struggled in the first two rounds, and he even ate a flush knee strike that wobbled him. “The Nigerian Nightmare” started to come alive in the third round and even had a late surge in the final stanza, but du Plessis still outworked him to earn a unanimous decision.

During his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier, Usman blasted the judges over the score totals, but he admitted he isn’t used to losing in the fashion he did. Later on during the UFC OKC post-fight press conference, the former UFC welterweight titleholder was noncommittal on which weight class he plans to compete in next (via MMAJunkie).

“It doesn’t matter,” Usman said. “I can make both. 170 is a cut. But at the end of the day, I’m not the biggest welterweight. It is what it is. You deal with it. If there are opportunities there, I’m going to go there. If there are opportunities up here, I’m going to stay here. There are really no… it doesn’t matter. It sucks I wasn’t victorious tonight because we’re having a complete conversation, a different conversation, that I went up and had been able to go out and execute the way that I wanted. I guess this is my time of not being able to execute like I’ve done to most guys.”

Usman has now gone 1-4 in his last five outings. Two of those defeats have occurred at 185 pounds. Some have questioned just how much longer the 39-year-old should continue to compete in MMA. Usman has long established himself as a surefire future UFC Hall of Famer, but it’s clear he wants to continue his prizefighting career.
