After Daniel Cormier was forced out of his UFC 197 light heavyweight title defense against Jon Jones on April 23rd due to a knee injury, many expected Anthony Johnson to step-in on short notice to fight Jones. While the UFC tried to book Jones vs. Johnson for the main event of UFC 197, he was unable to accept the bout due to the fact that he was forced to undergo mouth surgery recently.

Friday evening it was announced that Daniel Cormier would no longer be able to fight Jon Jones in the main event of UFC 197 after suffering a knee injury in training. Ultimately, UFC President Dana White announced on SportsCenter on Saturday that Ovince Saint Preux would be stepping in on short notice to fight Jon Jones for the interim UFC light heavyweight championship at UFC 197 on April 23rd.

While initial reports were released that the two were going to be fighting at UFC 200 in the welterweight rematch, Diaz had said that he wanted the fight at 155 so that Conor McGregor would not have any excuses if he lost the rematch.

In addition to McGregor vs. Diaz II, the UFC also announced that Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar would be fighting for the interim featherweight championship at UFC 200, leading many to question why McGregor didn’t go through with his plans to defend his featherweight championship.
