Jon Jones to DC: 'So much for being willing to die'

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones showed nothing but respect for Daniel Cormier on Saturday morning, this after “DC” was forced to withdraw from their highly anticipated UFC 197 rematch with an injury. Jones even took to Twitter and wished Cormier a healthy recovery:

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (21-1 MMA) will return to the octagon for the first time in over a year when he squares off with Ovince Saint Preux (19-7 MMA) in the main event of UFC 197 for the promotions interim light heavyweight title. “OSP” has gone 3-1 in his past four octagon appearances. His most recent effort saw him score a unanimous decision victory over former Strikeforce champ Rafael Cavalcante at February’s UFC Fight Night 82 event. Prior to that, Saint Preux was submitted in the third-round by Glover Teixeira at UFC Fight Night 73. “OSP” also holds first-round knockout victories over “Shogun” Rua and Patrick Cummins.

Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo is still not happy that the UFC decided to put Conor McGregor in a welterweight rematch against Nate Diaz at July’s UFC 200 event. Aldo, who had been campaigning for a rematch with McGregor after suffering a shocking 13-second defeat to the Irishman in December, will now rematch Frankie Edgar for the UFC’s interim featherweight title on July 9.

After news broke last night that Daniel Cormier was injured and would no longer be able to defend his UFC light heavyweight championship against Jon Jones at UFC 197, there was much speculation as to who the UFC would select as a fill-in opponent for Jones. While initial reports were that the UFC had offered the fight to Anthony Johnson, he was unable to take the fight due to recently undergoing mouth surgery.

In addition it was announced that Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo would be competing for the interim featherweight championship. Following McGregor’s loss to Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 196, McGregor stated that he would likely go back down to featherweight to defend his championship. This lead to much confusion when the UFC booked McGregor vs. Diaz II at UFC 200, rather than a featherweight title defense for McGregor.

While yesterday was in fact April Fools Day, lightweight Norman Parke took to Facebook to announce that he had been released from the UFC following his decision loss against Rustam Khabilov at ‘UFC Fight Night: Silva vs. Bisping’ back in February. Parke, the ‘TUF Smashes’ winner, compiled a 5-3-1 record inside the Octagon during his 4 year stint with the promotion. He posted the following on Facebook.
