UFC Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez grew up in the rough parts of Philadelphia, where fighting was a big part of his daily life, well before he ever stepped into the cage. But according to Alvarez, growing up in ‘Rocky’s’ neighborhood in Kensington is not without it’s merits. “It was tough, tough neighborhood. That’s where Rocky was filmed, there are boxing gyms on every corner. It’s a fighting neighborhood,” Alvarez told Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com.

It’s no secret that Miesha Tate is one hell of a fighter. She has, after all, won titles in both Strikeforce and the UFC. Yet Tate is also one of the sport’s kindest competitors–something she reminded the world of this weekend when she aided some struggling strangers while out on a hike in Nevada’s Mary Jane Falls. During her trek, Tate came across a mother who was struggling to carry her injured daughter back down the mountain. As Tate explained in a Sunday night post to her Facebook page, she then carried the girl down the mountain for the mother, keeping her spirits up with conversation as she did.

It’s no secret that UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is not particularly keen on fighting number-one-contender Stephen Thompson. Instead, the champ infamously explained on Fox Sports that he is interested in “money fights” with the likes of Nick Diaz and Georges St-Pierre. Unsurprisingly, Woodley’s stance is not going over well with Thompson. On a recent episode of Submission Radio, Thompson addressed Woodley’s strange reluctance to fight him.

In the main event of UFC on Fox 21, UFC welterweight Demian Maia dazzled with a first-round submission of long-time contender Carlos Condit. The win extended the Brazilian’s streak to six, and under slightly different conditions, probably would have catapulted him directly into a title fight with welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. Unfortunately for Maia, the welterweight division is also home to Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, a streaking striker with seven straight wins behind him. Unless the UFC throws us a serious curveball, Thompson will be given the next shot at Woodley, while Maia will have to wait to fight the winner of that bout.

Fresh off this fantastic win, Silva is attempting to take his destiny into his own hands rather than sit back and wait for the UFC matchmaking team to tell him what’s next.

UFC middleweight Gegard Mousasi has been campaigning for a fight with Vitor Belfort for years. At UFC 204, which will emanate from Manchester, England on October 8, the Dutchman will finally get the fight he’s been asking for. A few years ago, Belfort was one of the most ferocious fighters on the UFC roster–though he was helped by his use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) at the time. Now that TRT has been banned by the UFC, however, Belfort has diminished quite significantly. This has Mousasi feeling very confident ahead of their anticipated UFC 204 showdown.

One such star was BJJ whiz Dillon Danis, who helped the Irishman prepare for Diaz’s dangerous grappling arsenal. Another was All-Ireland boxing champion Conor Wallace, who was brought in to help McGregor adapt to Diaz’s rangy brand of boxing. MMA can be pretty brutal at times. As fans of the sport, we frequently witness thunderous knockouts, bloody battles, and freak injuries. Yet MMA is also a heavily regulated sport, with a long list of rules in place to promote fighter safety. Groin shots are illegal. Eye pokes are too. Headbutts are forbidden. Hair-pulling is a no-go. The list goes on and on. Of course, this hasn’t always been the case. In the early days of MMA, competitors were allowed to employ everything from groin strikes to hair-pulling during a fight. And while these long-abolished attacks are now widely viewed as dangerous and unfair, there are still people out there who romanticize them.

Back in 2013, former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and number-one-contender Alexander Gustafsson engaged in an unforgettable war for the ages. In the end, Jones would walk away with a unanimous decision win, though many parties believed Gustafsson had done enough to steal the title. Today, Jones is neck-deep in a complicated stretch that has seen him detained for a laundry list of crimes, stripped of his UFC title, and suspended for failing a USADA-administered drug test. Gustafsson, meanwhile, fought yesterday, rebounding from a two-fight skid by defeating a game Jan Blachowicz.
