Many fans were upset to hear the news that UFC 205 lost a big fight on Tuesday. Tim Kennedy just arrived in New York for his scheduled match against Rashad Evans on Tuesday only to find out that Evans was pulled from competition. Evans told MMA Fighting that he was in great shape and that no one needed to worry about him but was facing an issue with the athletic commission in New York that will not allow him to compete.

Unfortunate news surfaced Tuesday afternoon that former UFC champion Rashad Evans had been forced to withdraw from his scheduled UFC 205 scrap with Tim Kennedy this weekend. The fight, which was set to serve as Evans highly anticipated middleweight debut, would have taken place on the Fox Sports 1 preliminary card of the event.

While former UFC light heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones is widely believed to be the pound for pound kingpin in MMA, Jones has fought just once in nearly two years. After defeating Daniel Cormier in a highly anticipated grudge match in January of 2015, Jones was booked to defend his title against Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson later in the year. Unfortunately, Jones was involved in an infamous hit & run car accident that ultimately saw him stripped of the title, and pulled from the card. Ultimately, after Jones was stripped of the title and pulled from the card, Daniel Cormier stepped in to fight Johnson for the vacant light heavyweight championship, winning the fight via 3rd round submission to claim the vacant light heavyweight championship.

UFC 200, which occured in July of this year, was supposed to be a great card. Unfortunately, its lineup was torn asunder by injuries and PED busts, until it stood out as more of good card. We’ve been much more lucky in the case of UFC 205, the mammoth card that marks the UFC’s debut in New York City. Though the card was hit by one shakeup when Lyman Good was forced out of his planned bout with Belal Muhammad due a potential USADA violation, the card has otherwise gone unscathed.

Back in July, at UFC 200, Frankie Edgar & Jose Aldo stepped into the Octagon to square off for the interim featherweight championship. In addition to the pair fighting for the interim featherweight strap, they were also fighting for a chance to step into the Octagon with featherweight champion Conor McGregor, who knocked out Aldo in just 13 seconds to claim the featherweight championship back in December at UFC 194. As if the stakes weren’t high enough, the fight was also a rematch between the pair, who first met at UFC 156 in 2013, where Aldo secured a unanimous decision win to retain the featherweight title.

While UFC President Dana White has remained adamant that if McGregor wins, he must vacate one of the two title belts in order to prevent holding up either division, McGregor began by stating that it would take an army for the UFC brass to take one of the titles away from him. The most notable rankings change that stemmed from the UFC’s recent trip to Mexico was the upward climb of Tony Ferguson. After defeating former champion Rafael Dos Anjos in the card’s main event, he surged past undefeated contender Khabib Nurmagomedov to steal the lightweight division’s number-one spot. Only the current champion Eddie Alvarez is ranked ahead of him.

This weekend, the UFC will make its long anticipated debut in New York City with UFC 205. The card will be headlined by a lightweight title fight between divisional king Eddie Alvarez and featherweight titleholder Conor McGregor. If McGregor comes out on top in this massive showdown, he’ll become the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes concurrently. When this blockbuster bout was being constructed, their was speculation that McGregor would be forced to vacate his featherweight title, which would of course deprive him of the opportunity to make history as a two-division champ. According to McGregor, however, this was never a real worry, as he’s confident in his ability to call his own shots within the UFC.
