Anthony Pettis eyeing both of Conor McGregor's title belts

Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis experienced a bit of a career resurgence earlier this year when he dropped down to featherweight in the midst of a 3-fight losing streak at 155, which saw him lose the UFC lightweight championship to Rafael dos Anjos before dropping back to back losses. When Pettis dropped down to featherweight several months ago, he put on an impressive performance as he submitted JiuJitsu ace Charles Oliveira via 3rd round guillotine choke to earn earn himself the #6 ranking on the UFC’s official lightweight rankings. On the heels of his win over Oliveira, Pettis signed to fight featherweight #1 contender Max Holloway on December 10th at UFC 206. With that being said, ‘Showtime’ already has plans to take both of Conor McGregor’s title belts.

UFC 205 was a massive event held at New York’s historic Madison Square Garden over the weekend and UFC President Dana White claims that UFC 205 broke every UFC record. “Sitting here tonight we broke every record in UFC history tonight,” White said to the media at the post-fight presser. “Every record. The only one I’m waiting on now is the FOX number, how did FOX Sports 1 do. It would be really, really weird and make no sense if we didn’t break that one too.”

Long before Conor McGregor’s history-making defeat of Eddie Alvarez, Tyron Woodley’s memorable draw with Stephen Thompson, and Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s domination of Karolina Kowalkiewicz occured on UFC 205’s main card, Frankie Edgar scored a much needed win over Jeremy Stephens on the undercard. Though Edgar was rattled by a second-round Stephens head kick, he was the better man throughout the rest of the fight, which ultimately earned him the judges’ favor. With this win, Edgar bounced back from a July loss to Jose Aldo, and reasserted himself as one of the featherweight division’s top contenders. While his status as one of the best featherweight fighters on earth is irrefutable, however, it’s hard to say what the future holds for him.

To recount, Octagon announcer Bruce Buffer first announced the result as a split decision win for Tyron Woodley. In the subsequent moments, Buffer announced that the fight was actually a majority draw.

Conor McGregor has grown famous for his ‘Mystic Mac’ predictions before fights. Ahead of his UFC 205 scrap with Eddie Alvarez this past weekend that saw McGregor pick up a 2nd round TKO win and claim the lightweight championship, McGregor predicted that he would finish Alvarez in the first round. Interestingly enough, not only did Mystic Mac predict that he would finish Alvarez despite the fact that only one man has been able to finish Alvarez throughout the course of his nearly 15 year professional MMA career, he actually predicted that he would win two belts in the UFC, and have shares in the UFC.

This past weekend in New York, undefeated Dagestani fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov took to the Octagon to fight top ranked UFC lightweight Michael ‘The Menace’ Johnson. The fight, which served as just Nurmagomedov’s second fight back in the Octagon following his two-year layoff from 2014-2016, was an incredibly dominant one for Nurmagomedov, who utilized his Sambo to take Johnson down, and land absolutely brutal ground & pound shots before ultimately submitting Johnson in the third round. With the win, which impressed famed rapper Snoop Dogg, Nurmagomedov now advances to 24-0 over the course of his professional career, and 8-0 over the course of his UFC career. During his post-fight Octagon interview, Nurmagomedov took the opportunity to call out UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor. Despite that, Nurmagomedov was MIA for a 1 on 1 with media members for his post-fight press conference.

This past weekend on the preliminary card of UFC 205, former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar stepped into the Octagon to fight top ranked featherweight Jeremy Stephens. Edgar, a New Jersey native, received a warm welcome to the Octagon by the New York crowd. Edgar put on an impressive performance as he ultimately picked up a unanimous decision win over Jeremy Stephens, slamming ‘Lil Heathen’ on several occasions while going for the takedown despite being the smaller fighter. The win also returned Edgar to the win column after dropping a unanimous decision to Jose Aldo on the main card of UFC 200 back in July for the interim featherweight championship. The loss to Aldo, which snapped Edgar’s 5-fight win streak, was his first in three years, with his most recent loss before that coming to Aldo at UFC 156.

The fight was an incredibly dominant one for McGregor, who dropped Alvarez for the first time just moments into the fight, ultimately dominating the fight from bell to bell as he ended up finishing Alvarez in the second round via TKO, becoming the first man to stop Alvarez in the UFC, and just the second man to finish Alvarez in his professional career.

Last weekend, the UFC made its long awaited debut in New York City with UFC 205. To celebrate this Big Apple debut, the organization stacked the card with massive fights, including a whopping three title bouts. The first of these title bouts saw reigning strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk attempt the fourth defense of her title opposite fellow Polish star Karolina Kowalkiewicz. Though she was wobbled by Kowalkiewicz in the fourth round, the strawweight queen was dominant throughout the rest of her fight, and would ultimately leave New York City with a unanimous decision win, and her title.

In addition to his reputation as an incredible fighter, McGregor is also known as a brash and boundlessly confident personality. He’s developed this rep over the course of dozens of press conferences and post-fight interviews, throughout which he’s verbally pumped his own tires and slashed those of nearly every other fighter on the UFC roster.
