bjpenndotcom - December 27, 2016
In just days, UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz will step into the Octagon against undefeated bantamweight contender Cody Garbrandt in a highly anticipated matchup for the UFC bantamweight championship. Going into the fight, ‘The Dominator’ and ‘No Love’ have never shied away from talking trash back and forth every opportunity they get. At UFC 202 back in August, where Garbrandt defeated Takeya Mizugaki via 1st round KO, he and the champ were forced to be separated backstage by Daniel Cormier when they began to get into a verbal altercation.

Earlier this year, in the co-main event of July’s historic UFC 200, WWE star and former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar made a largely unexpected return to the Octagon. Despite the fact that he had not fought in many years, he was able to grind Mark Hunt to a unanimous decision win.
Featherweight contender Jeremy Stephens calls for fight with Clay Guida
Tom Taylor - December 27, 2016
Last month, on the undercard of the massively hyped UFC 205, long-time featherweight contender Jeremy Stephens came up short in a fun fight with former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. Though he nearly finished his foe with a second-round head-kick, Stephens was outworked for the rest of the fight, culminating in a clear unanimous win for Edgar. With this result, Stephens took a few steps back down the featherweight ladder. He’ll now need a big win against a reputable opponent before he’s talked about as a contender again. He is already on the hunt for that next opponent.
Sean Shelby: winner of Dillashaw vs. Lineker not guaranteed next bantamweight title shot
Tom Taylor - December 27, 2016
This Friday, the UFC will return to beautiful Las Vegas, Nevada with UFC 207. In the co-main event of the evening, we’ll see reining bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz attempt to defend his title against dangerous challenger Cody Garbrandt. Earlier on the main card, we’ll witness another high-stakes bantamweight scrap, as former champion TJ Dillashaw takes on stone-fisted former flyweight John Lineker. The winner of this fight, it would seem, is the obvious next opponent for the winner of the card’s Cruz vs. Garbrandt co-main event battle. As it turns out, however, this is not necessarily certain. In UFC 207’s episode of The Watch List, UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby explained that while the winner of Dillashaw vs. Lineker is certainly a frontrunner for the next bantamweight title shot, the presence of other contenders like Jimmie Rivera, Bryan Caraway and John Dodson in the division means nothing is certain.

Tom Taylor - December 26, 2016
On Christmas Eve, it was announced that an injured Cain Velasquez would not be licensed for his UFC 207 rematch with Fabricio Werdum. This, of course, left Werdum without an opponent for the quickly approaching card. Shortly after this unfortunate news broke, several of the game’s top heavyweights threw their names in the hat, hoping to be chosen as Werdum’s last-minute replacement opponent. Statements from NSAC and UFC on Cain Velasquez's removal from UFC 207

As Santa Clause geared up for another trip around the planet, we learned that the former heavyweight champion had been pulled from his planned UFC 207 bout with fellow former champ and recent foil Fabricio Werdum. In the buildup to his planned bout with Werdum, Velasquez made no secret of the fact that he was dealing with an injury. In fact, Velasquez even admitted that he had back surgery scheduled for mere days after the fight. Despite this injury, however, he claimed that he had every intention of fighting, and apparently, even got the OK from his doctor to do so.
BJJ star Dillon Danis wants "easy fight" with Sage Northcutt for potential UFC debut
Tom Taylor - December 26, 2016
In March, Irish MMA megastar Conor McGregor found himself on the wrong end of one the year’s biggest upsets as he tapped to a second-round rear-naked choke dealt by Nate Diaz. Given his previous dominance and his status as the UFC’s biggest star ever, McGregor was quickly given a shot at redemption against his foil. In preparation for this rematch with Diaz, which was momentarily scheduled for UFC 200 but ultimately occurred at UFC 202 in August, McGregor enlisted the help of Marcelo Garcia black belt Dillon Danis to sharpen his jiu jitsu skill. This, of course, thrust Danis into the MMA spotlight, where he has remained ever since.

Though Rousey was expected by most to blow through her challenger, she was ultimately turned off by a second round head kick in one of the biggest upsets in the history of our sport. She has not been seen in the Octagon since.

While Velasquez was quick to refute the reports, stating that as far as he knew, the fight was still on, NSAC director Bob Bennett has now stated on record that Velasquez is medically suspended.
