The UFC women’s featherweight division is in disarray. Since winning the inaugural title with a controversial January decision over Holly Holm, reigning champ Germaine de Randamie has been something of a ghost, revealing little in the way of information as to when or who she might fight next. At the same time, former Invicta champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino – the consensus best fighter in the division – has been chomping at the bit for a shot at the absentee champion, while reigning Invicta featherweight queen Megan Anderson has been patiently waiting to get the call for her UFC debut. As I said, disarray. On this Monday afternoon, the chaos-ridden division seems to have gotten a sorely needed injection of order.

While this video left many of VanZant’s fans drooling, its provocative tone also generated significant criticism from her peers. When the UFC travels across the united states – and further afield – the rules its athletes compete under can change depending on the rules of the athletic commission that is overseeing the fight. According to veteran referee Big John McCarthy, this is a real problem, and at the end of the day, an inconsistency that is simply not fair to the fighters. McCarthy explained this feeling on a recent episode of MMA Junkie Radio, using the rules of the NFL for context.

With former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ suspension wrapping up in July, it’s looking like we can expect him to return to the cage sometime this summer. And though there was some talk of his taking a tune-up fight in his first fight back, it now looks as though he’ll jump right back into the fire with an immediate title shot against reigning champ and long-time rival Daniel Cormier. Jones and Cormier’s rivalry is one of the most visible in MMA, and it dates back to the buildup to their first encounter, which occurred in January of 2015. Jones won this first fight by decision.

Recently, we learned that heavyweight legend Mark Hunt had painted his chest with a new and beautifully done tattoo. With this new ink, which joins to half-sleeves, Hunt enters the books as one of the most heavily tattooed fighters in the UFC, if not in all of MMA.

This year, we’ve seen some pretty jaw-dropping knockouts occur inside the UFC’s Octagon. We saw Jorge Masvidal burst into welterweight title contention with a second-round knockout of Donal “Cowboy” Cerrone. We saw Derrick Lewis club Travis Browne to a second-round KO. We watched Jimi Manuwa level Corey Anderson with a first-round left hook. Most recently, we saw “Platinum” Mike Perry cut Jake Ellenberger down with a slicing elbow to the face. The list goes on and on.
