On August 5, the UFC will touch down in Mexico City, Mexico for the fourth time. It will do so with UFC Fight Night 114, a card that, while still some distance away, is already coming together. On Sunday afternoon, the UFC announced the main event for this anticipated return to Mexico. This main event will occur at flyweight, where Mexico’s own Brandon Moreno will take on established star Sergio Pettis. The two talents, who stand out as perhaps the brightest contenders in the division, will battle to take a huge step up the flyweight ladder, and perhaps even earn a shot at dominant divisional king Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson.

Just shy of one year ago, the combat sports world was rocked by the news that street fighter turned mixed martial arts icon “Kimbo Slice” (née Kevin Ferguson) had passed away at just 42 years of age. Last Friday, when Bellator touched down in London, England, Slice’s son Kevin Ferguson Jr. – who fights with the monicker “Baby Slice” – scored the first win of his pro MMA career. Baby Slice earned this win by stopping DJ Griffin with first-round strikes.

On Friday evening, in the main event of Bellator 179, British bomber Paul Daley had the opportunity to spoil the Bellator debut of former UFC welterweight title challenger Rory MacDonald, and set himself up for a shot at the winner of Bellator NYC’s Douglas Lima vs. Lorenz Larkin title fight. Regrettably for Daley and his British fans, MacDonald was simply too much. The Canadian star locked up a choke for the win in the second round. Just moments after his loss, a clever Daley shifted gears and planted the seed for his next fight by engaging in a near-brawl with fellow British striker Michael Page in the stands.

This weekend, UFC fighters congregated for the 2017 UFC Athlete Retreat. During the course of the event, various guest speakers made appearances to talk to the fighters about various topics. One speaker was none other than NBA legend Kobe Bryant, who fielded questions from fighters as part of his speaking time. While no phones were allowed at the time of Bryant’s speech, UFC veteran Leslie Smith took to Twitter to recall an interesting interaction she had with Bryant after she asked the NBA legend what he thought of a Fighter’s Union.

Saturday afternoon in Tokyo Japan, 12 year old Momo made her highly anticipated MMA debut after making headlines quite some time ago for signing to fight a 24-year old in her MMA debut. It didn’t take long for the much younger Momo to lock in a rear naked choke against 24-year old Momoko Yamasaki under the Deep Jewels banner this weekend at Deep Jewels 16. The bout took place at the ‘minimumweight’ division of 95 pounds, and was of course an amateur MMA bout. As a result of the fight being an amateur one, headgear and shin guards were worn by both competitors. Regardless, the win marked a successful MMA debut for the young prospect.

Former Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg has been absent from the Octagon for nearly a year now. In 2016, Cyborg made her UFC debut against Leslie Smith in a highly anticipated catchweight fight. Cyborg won the fight in just under 90 seconds, defeating Smith via TKO. In her next fight, Cyborg entered into the Octagon again for a catchweight fight as she fought Swedish striker Lina Lansberg. Despite enduring a brutal weight cut, Cyborg picked up a 2nd round TKO win, extending her UFC record to 2-0. Several months following the win over Lansberg, Cyborg was notified of a potential USADA anti-doping violation as a result of a substance taken to help her recover from the brutal weight cut leading up to the Lansberg fight. While Cyborg was briefly suspended, she was then granted a TUE in February, and her suspension was subsequently lifted.

Friday afternoon in the United Kingdom, UFC veteran Rory MacDonald made his highly anticipated Bellator MMA debut against heavy handed knockout artist Paul Daley. MacDonald dominated the opening round, using his grappling to take Daley down and negate his knockout power. In the second round, MacDonald once again took Daley to the ground, this time however securing a rear-naked choke to finish the fight, making ‘The Red King’ the Bellator welterweight #1 contender. Following the fight, MacDonald spoke about the win, saying:
