BREAKING | Khabib Nurmagomedov battles Al Iaquinta in UFC 223 main event, Iaquinta can't win title

It has been a brutal week for undefeated lightweight star Khabib Nurmagomedov. First, his originally scheduled opponent, Tony Ferguson, was forced out of their planned UFC 223 lightweight title fight with an injury. Miraculously, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway then agreed to step in and fight Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title on just six days notice. Regrettably, he too was then forced out of the contest when the New York State Athletic Commission decided they didn’t like the look of his weight cut.

Hours after he went berserk in the Barclay’s Center, throwing a dolly through the window of the UFC 223 bus and injuring several of his peers, UFC lightweight champ (?) Conor McGregor turned himself in to the police. After spending the night in custody, McGregor was hit with a bevy of charges, including a felony mischief charge and a misdemeanor assault charge. This afternoon, McGregor appeared in court. Despite the scale of his Thursday afternoon rampage, he will not be detained. The Irishman’s bail has been set at $50,000. He will also be allowed to return home to Ireland, as his passport will not be confiscated. McGregor’s friend, Cian Cowley has had his bail set at $25.

This morning, the MMA community was rocked by the terrible news that Max Holloway—in the midst of his cut down to 155 pounds—was deemed unfit to fight at UFC 223, and forced of his planned lightweight title fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov as a result. “[Khabib Nurmagomedov] my brother, I want to keep going but they are stopping me,” Holloway said in a Friday morning statement on Twitter, assuring that he would have continued to cut weight were it not for the intervention of the New York State Athletic Commission. “Sorry to your team and the fans. You don’t deserve this. This is number one. Shout outs to you and [Anthony Pettis]. Give the fans what they deserve.”

This morning, we were hit with the unfortunate news that UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway had been deemed “unfit to compete” and forced out of his last-minute lightweight title fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov, which was to serve as the main event of UFC 223 tomorrow night in Brooklyn, New York. Shortly after this news surfaced, Max Holloway released a heartfelt statement, apologizing to Khabib Nurmagomedov, and also referencing UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, who was briefly linked to a last-second showdown with Nurmagomedov.

If ever there was a truly cursed fight card, it’s UFC 223. A week after Tony Ferguson withdrew from his originally scheduled main event battle with Khabib Nurmagomedov, and less than 24 hours after Conor McGregor and his cronies caused the cancellation of a whopping three scheduled fights, featherweight champ Max Holloway has been forced out of his last-minute showdown with Khabib Nurmagomedov, having been deemed medically unfit to fight. The good news is that Khabib Nurmagomedov could still fight on the card. According to multiple reports, Anthony Pettis has been called on to step in against the undefeated Dagestani star. Pettis will first need to hit the 155-mark.

Yesterday afternoon, Conor McGregor arrived at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York—the host venue for UFC 223—and all hell broke loose. Reportedly seeking vengeance for Khabib Nurmagomedov’s heated run-in with his friend Artem Lobov, the Irishman and his henchmen attacked a bus containing a number of UFC 223 fighters. In video footage of the fracas, McGregor could be seen pelting the bus with whatever he could get his hands on, including a dolly, which he used to smash the back window of the vehicle. In addition to the significant property damage caused, McGregor’s rampage injured a few fighters, including Michael Chiesa and Ray Borg, who were ultimately forced out of their UFC 223 contests as a result.

Conor McGregor‘s Thursday afternoon rampage in Brooklyn, New York absolutely decimated the UFC 223 lineup. In one fell swoop, the crazed star and his cronies caused the cancellation of a whopping three scheduled bouts. The first bout to go was Artem Lobov’s undercard scrap with Alex Caceres. Lobov was removed from the fight for his role in the chaos at the host venue, and no replacement opponent was sought for Caceres.

McGregor and his team can be seen throwing various large objects at a bus that was transporting the card’s red corner fighters. Windows on the bus were shattered and people including Michael Chiesa and Ray Borg were taken to the hospital to get checked on for injuries from broken glass.

Conor McGregor’s attack on the UFC 223 fighter bus (see it here) nearly left the card without a co-main event, as UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas was badly rattled by the ordeal, having nearly been injured by one of the Irishman’s projectiles. Apparently, it was all severe enough that she was almost forced off the card. Luckily, Namajunas is reported to have regrouped, and decided to compete as planned on Saturday night. Shortly after Conor McGregor and his entourage caused a scene of absolute mayhem at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, NY, (watch that here) reports began to surface that the Irish star had been arrested. Apparently, these reports were premature, as McGregor is not yet in custody. Artem Lobov, meanwhile, who is one of McGregor’s main training partners, and a key player in today’s fracas, has been removed from his UFC 223 undercard fight with Alex Caceres.

Now, UFC boss Dana White has spoken up on the madness. As you can expect, he is furious. Dana White: "What happened today was criminal, disgusting and it makes me sick."
