MMA Community reacts to Darren Till missing weight

The main event of tomorrow’s UFC Fight Night 130 card was almost scratched earlier today when event headliner Darren Till missed weight by a whopping 3.5 pounds (174.5 pounds). Thankfully the UFC was able to convince Till’s opponent, Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson (14-2-1 MMA), to continue on with the fight despite the Liverpool natives botched weight cut.

If you haven’t heard, Darren Till missed weight for his UFC Liverpool-headlining showdown with Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson by 3.5 pounds. The fight will go ahead as planned, so long as Till does not weigh any more than 188 pounds by 1:00pm BST tomorrow. Till will also surrender 30% of his purse to his foe. Speaking to MMAjunkie after he hit the scales, Till explained why failed to make weight. While he’s making no excuses, and seems quite ashamed, he did divulge that his cut was joggled by a family emergency.

The fight will go ahead as planned, with the stipulation that Till does not weigh any more than 188 pounds by 1:00pm BST tomorrow. Till will also surrender 30% of his purse to his foe. While reports suggest that Till’s botched weight cut is due, at least in part, to a family emergency, he’s receiving quite a bit of flack all the same. As you probably guessed, some of this flack came from the ever-outspoken Colby Covington, who will fight Rafael dos Anjos for the UFC interim welterweight title at UFC 225 this June 9.

When the UFC made the shocking decision to cut Yair Rodriguez earlier this month, the expectation was that he would find another home quite quickly — potentially with South American MMA powerhouse Combate Americas. Apparently, Combate Americas was initially interested in signing Rodriguez, and quickly offered him a deal that is said to be more lucrative than his last in the UFC. According to MMAMania, however, the promotion has since rescinded its offer.

Stephen Thompson won't be surprised if Darren Till shoots for a takedown in Liverpool

Stephen Thompson, who holds the number-one spot in the UFC welterweight rankings, is confident that he’ll be too much for his UFC Liverpool opponent, eighth-ranked welterweight Darren Till. “That’s what I’m out there to prove to the fans and everybody around the world,” Thompson told Damon Martin of MMAWeekly. “There are levels to this. I’m going to go out there and I’m going to do work. You’re going to see the level of that No. 1 and No. 8. UFC’s giving him a chance so I know he’s going to be coming prepared. Anybody in the UFC has a chance to knock you out. So I’m not going to take this guy lightly.”

Roughly six years ago, UFC welterweight Darren Till was nearly stabbed to death during a fight inside a nightclub. Ahead of his scrap with Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, which headlines the UFC’s debut in his hometown of Liverpool, Till recounted the grim night that he was stabbed. “There was an incident in a club,” Till said in an interview with RT Sport (h/t Chisanga Malata of Express). “I was always training hard in the gym but I didn’t have much focus. My focus was on other things as well. I was in a club and a fight broke out. ”
