Bruce Buffer suggests Daniel Cormier should retire in favor of a trilogy bout with Jon Jones

UFC announcer Bruce Buffer doesn’t think a trilogy fight between bitter rivals Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier “should happen”.

The long time voice of the octagon, Buffer, shared his thoughts on the matter during a recent interview with Express Sport.

“I don’t think it should happen unless they want it to happen,” Buffer said at the PokerStars Players No Limit Hold’em Championship (PSPC) in the Bahamas. “I think that Cormier has made what I would guess to be a tremendous amount of money in his last three fights. He has a fight potentially scheduled with Brock Lesner for a couple of months from now. If that comes to fruition then he is going to make a tremendous amount of money out of the fight.”

Bruce Buffer continued:

“He is at a point now, being a double belt holder and all, he could just retire on top. But, money talks, people walk and you never know how much money will be involved. If you said ‘hey I want Jon and you to fight’ then he is going to do what he needs to do.”

Daniel Cormier was most recently seen in action in the headliner of November’s UFC 230 event in New York, where he submitted Derrick Lewis to retain his UFC heavyweight title.

Meanwhile, Jon Jones last competed at December’s UFC 232 event in Los Angeles, where he captured the promotions vacant light heavyweight title by defeating Alexander Gustafsson via third-round knockout. “Bones” had previously defeated “The Mauler” via decision at UFC 165 in Toronto.

Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier have arguably the greatest rivalry in the history of the sport. The pair have met on two occasions in the past, with “Bones” emerging victorious in both contests. Most recently, Jon Jones defeated Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 via knockout, however, that ruling was later changed to a no-contest after Jones was flagged by USADA for banned substances.

If the proposed title fight with former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is to happen, it will first require “The Beast” to cough up the $250,000 he owes to the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
