Jack Della Maddalena’s coach makes bold claim on potential Islam Makhachev rematch despite lopsided first fight

Ben Vickers, the coach of Jack Della Maddalena, made an intriguing comment on a potential Islam Makhchev rematch.

Della Maddalena suffered a lopsided decision loss to Makhachev at UFC 322 in November to lose his welterweight title. Della Maddalena was dominated in the fight as he had a hard time stopping Makhchev’s takedowns.

Following the loss, Della Maddalena is set to return to the Octagon at UFC Perth on Saturday in the main event against Carlos Prates. If Della Maddalena wins, he would be right back in the title picture, and his coach believes he has all the tools to beat Makhchev, despite how one-sided the first fight was.

“We appreciate the run we had, and we know the MMA Gods smiled on us for those ten years because they don’t always. They probably started frowning a bit when they gave you the GOAT on your first title defense,” Vickers said to Souther Cross Combat. “A wrestler, the best grappler in the game. We believe Jack can beat him. Jack was dominated in that fight. And for me to sit here and go Jack can still beat Islam probably with the same game plan we had the first time around, people will start to think that you’re delusional.

“But, we firmly believe it, and our belief has gotten us this far. All due respect to Islam, he’s the GOAT for a reason. No one has beaten him in recent times, and it’s a tough gig; all the stars need to align, and they didn’t, and we didn’t get the job done, but we can, and we will. We hope we can right that wrong in the not-too-distant future.”

It’s a bold comment from Della Maddalena’s coach, as even though the first fight was so one-sided, he believes his fighter can win that fight.

But, before that fight can happen, Della Maddalena will need to beat Carlos Prates on Saturday at UFC Perth in what should be a very fan-friendly fight.
