UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev has given his thoughts on Ian Machado Garry’s style as we approach UFC 330.

Later this summer, Islam Makhachev will attempt to once again cement himself as one of the best fighters on the planet when he defends his UFC welterweight championship against top contender Ian Machado Garry.

The expectation from many is that Makhachev will retain, but at this point, it’s hard to know which way a lot of UFC title fights will go, given the unpredictability we have seen in recent times – plus, Machado Garry is an exceptionally talented fighter in his own right.

In a recent interview, Makhachev gave his honest thoughts on Machado Garry’s style when he competes.

Makhachev breaks down Machado Garry’s game

“Style-wise, he’s a tricky fighter,” Makhachev said of Machado Garry in a translated interview with Red Corner MMA. “He constantly runs away, fights on the backfoot. His opponents always have to chase him. I wouldn’t say he’s an entertaining fighter. From this perspective, (Michael) Morales, for example, he can wrestle, he goes forward. But ‘going forward’ has nothing to do with Ian Garry.”

“As I said before, it doesn’t work that way,” Makhachev said. “You can’t learn how to wrestle within three-four months or even half a year. (Jack) Della Maddalena worked on that, too, brought some guys in his camp. He spent his whole camp on it, and what? I had five attempts, and I took him down all five times.”

Whether you like him or you hate him, there’s no denying that Islam is ‘the guy’ right now, especially after the recent losses for Ilia Topuria and Alex Pereira.
