If Anthony “Rumble” Johnson had his way, he’d be fighting Daniel Cormier for the UFC light heavyweight title in the main event of UFC 206 on December 10. Unfortunately for him, Cormier was forced to withdraw from this bout with a groin injury. In the wake of Cormier’s withdrawal from the card, the UFC tried valiantly to find a replacement opponent for Rumble. The most suitable option they could fish out of the small pool of fighters who were willing to fight a monster like Rumble on just a few weeks notice, was the UFC’s fifth ranked middleweight, Gegard Mousasi.

Earlier this month, unfortunate news surfaced that UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier had been forced out of his UFC 206 scrap with Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson on December 10th, and would be sidelined until March due to a torn adductor in his groin. While the UFC began looking for a replacement opponent for ‘Rumble’, it wasn’t long before fight fans realized the odds of Johnson staying on the card were relatively slim given that he has not only defeated, but knocked out, all of the light heavyweights in the top 5.

After news surfaced earlier this week that UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier had been forced out of his UFC 206 scrap with Anthony Johnson just two weeks before the fight due to torn adductor in his groin, the UFC began to search for a replacement opponent for ‘Rumble’. The process was guaranteed to be a difficult one, given that Johnson had not only defeated, but knocked out everyone in the top 5 of the UFC’s light heavyweight division.

Friday afternoon, the MMA community received some unfortunate news, that UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier had been forced out of his upcoming UFC 206 scrap with Anthony Johnson on December 10th in Toronto, Canada. The fight was set to be Cormier’s second title defense since winning the belt in May of 2015, when he defeated Johnson via 3rd round submission. While the fight was initially supposed to be between Jon Jones and Anthony Johnson, Jones was stripped of the light heavyweight championship and suspended as the result of a hit-and-run incident in April of 2015.

Friday morning, news surfaced that UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier had been forced to withdraw from his highly anticipated UFC 206 showdown with Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson on December 10th in Toronto, Canada. The fight was set to be a rematch from UFC 187 in 2015, where Cormier defeated Johnson to win the vacant light heavyweight championship. Johnson was initially slated to fight Jon Jones on the card, however Jones was involved in an infamous hit-and-run incident that saw him suspended and stripped of the title, ultimately leading the UFC to booking Cormier vs. Johnson for the vacant light heavyweight championship.

Unfortunate news hit the MMA community on Friday when it was revealed that the UFC 206 main event title fight between UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and challenger Anthony Johnson was canceled. MMA Fighting was the first to report that Cormier was forced to pull out of the five-round title fight against #1 UFC ranked light heavyweight Athony Johnson due to suffering an injury.

Earlier this year, in the co-main event of the massively hyped UFC 202, Brazilian light heavyweight Glover Teixeira looked to reassert himself as a legitimate title contender with a win over Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. Unfortunately for Teixeira, he would instead become the latest man to crumble under Rumble’s legendary punching power. He hit the canvas just 13 seconds into the first round. In a recent interview with AG Fight (via Bloody Elbow), Teixeira recounted this violent loss, explaining that he simply didn’t have time to get to work with his grappling skill.

The pair first met inside the Octagon in 2015, when they fought for Jon Jones’ vacant light heavyweight championship. Johnson was initially slated to fight Jones at the event, however after a hit-and-run incident, Jones was pulled from the card and stripped of the belt, which subsequently led the promotion to replace Jones with Daniel Cormier. After weathering an early storm from ‘Rumble’ Cormier managed to utilize his wrestling to wear Johnson out, ultimately winning the fight via 3rd round submission to claim the vacant light heavyweight championship.

Cormier verbally agreed to the bout, and with Jon Jones currently sidelined with his NSAC appeal, all signs pointed to the pair having a fight sooner rather than later.

In the end, Cormier would use his Olympic-caliber wrestling to ground this fight and lock up a fight-winning rear-naked choke in the third round. Yet the Olympian very nearly didn’t escape the first round, as he was nearly finished by a rocket-fuelled Rumble punch just moments after the bout began. Today, Cormier has been elevated from interim champion to undisputed champion, and Rumble has bounced back from his loss to Cormier with three straight knockout wins. As such, a title rematch between the two light heavyweights appears to be imminent.
