Alexander Volkov opens up on his fear of fighting for UFC world title after UFC 328

UFC heavyweight Alexander Volkov has given his thoughts on possibly fighting for a UFC world title after UFC 328.
Last weekend at UFC 328, Alexander Volkov picked up a big win in the heavyweight division. He was able to overcome the challenge of Waldo Cortes-Acosta, a man who has done a pretty good job of tearing through his competition as of late in the UFC.
Alas, this was a step too far for him, as Volkov managed to grind out a win that vaults him right into title contention. Of course, he’s been here before, and he will likely have to wait a while given that Ciryl Gane, Alex Pereira and Tom Aspinall all either hold gold or are waiting to compete for the interim belt.
In his post-fight press conference, Volkov really opened up about where he’s currently at mentally in his career.
Volkov discusses title fight fears after UFC 328
“I’m so scared to fight for the title, honestly,” Volkov said. “(Cortes-Acosta) is so big, so huge, so talented. I don’t know what I’m doing here in the top two, honestly. It’s so hard to be there. … I was in my room today. I didn’t want to go out. I hid in my closet and coach couldn’t find me. I almost missed the bus to the arena.
“So I don’t know what I will do when I fight for a title. I don’t know why I’m telling you this. I was so brave after the win, but now I’ve come down a little bit. I don’t know why I did this.”

These quotes came after Volkov noted his flashbacks to the Derrick Lewis fight back in 2018, when he was on the verge of earning a title shot before suffering a last minute knockout defeat.
