Alexander Volkanovski voices support for fellow former champ Petr Yan ahead of UFC 299: “This will put him right back up there”
Alexander Volkanovski has voiced his support for Petr Yan ahead of his return to action at UFC 299.
This Saturday night, Petr Yan makes his long-awaited return to action. The Russian sensation hasn’t been seen since last March, when he was handily beaten by Merab Dvalishvili in a decision loss. This time around, he’ll be battling Song Yadong, in an attempt to break a run of four losses in his last five fights with an impressive return to form.
Of course, it won’t be that easy. Yadong is a strong competitor in his own right, and we haven’t seen Yan for a year.
The aforementioned Alexander Volkanovski recently previewed the matchup and showed support for ‘No Mercy’.
Volkanovski’s Yan thoughts
“That is a fun fight. You know, Petr Yan’s my guy and I know what he’s capable of. I think stylistically as well, it’s not bad, even though Song Yadong is that good and I feel like he’s a big threat to a lot of the people in that division, most people in that division in fact, I just feel like, stylistically, this isn’t too bad of a fight for Petr Yan. His defensive pressure, his defensive boxing, I think (against) someone powerful like Song Yadong, is gonna go very well for him.
“I think this is a great fight for him, especially ’cause not many people want to fight Song Yadong. I think this one, obviously after a couple of losses for Petr Yan, this will put him right back up there in title contention or, you know, back on the top echelon where you need to start giving these guys respect and at least talk about them not being too far from a title shot. And he’s a former champ, so he might be in them conversations anyway.”
