Khabib Nurmagomedov is starting his training camp for UFC 242 title fight with Dustin Poirier

Current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is starting his training camp for September’s UFC 242 event in Abu Dhabi.

While not officially announced, it is expected that there the undefeated Russian will square off with current interim lightweight champ Dustin Poirier in a five-round title unification bout.

According to American Kickboxing Academy head coach Javier Mendez that expectation still appears to be in place.

Mendez recently took to Instagram where he revealed that camp is beginning for Khabib Nurmagomedov, adding that he is very excited for the tough challenge that is Dustin Poirier.

“Excited to start camp with the Khabib Nurmagomedov for Sept 7th UFC Abu Dhabi against a very tough challenge in Dustin Poirier. But at end of that Night it will be and Still.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov was last seen in action at October’s UFC 229 event where he defeated Conor McGregor via fourth round submission to retain his UFC lightweight title.

Meanwhile, Dustin Poirier was last seen in action at UFC 236 where he defeated current UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway via unanimous decision to capture the promotions interim lightweight title.

Khabib Nurmagomedov boasts a perfect record of 27-0, which includes eleven wins under the UFC banner.

As for Poirier, ‘The Diamond’ is currently riding a six fight unbeaten streak which consists of wins over Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, Anthony Pettis, Jim Miller and the aforementioned Max Holloway.

September’s UFC 242 pay-per-view event currently features four fights, however no major bout announcements have been made official by the promotion.
