Kevin Lee issues statement after submission loss to Rafael dos Anjos

By Tom Taylor - May 19, 2019

When Kevin Lee moved up to the welterweight division to fight Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of UFC Rochester, his hope was to separate himself from a tough lightweight loss to Al Iaquinta and simultaneously assert himself as a top welterweight contender.

Unfortunately, his mission did not go as planned, as he was submitted by dos Anjos in the fourth round of the UFC Rochester main event.

Post-fight, a disappointed Kevin Lee took to Instagram to update his fans. “The Motown Phenom” issued a quick statement in the caption for this post, and also spoke on the setback in a video.

“Thank you for the support, I feel I really got some real people behind me now,” Kevin Lee wrote in the caption for this post. “I apologize for not coming through. I’m good, Imma take some time to evaluate everything.”

“Don’t know what happened out there tonight,” he added in the accompanying video. “I thought I did everything right leading up to this fight. I tried to eliminate every little distraction. Everything that wasn’t good for me. I felt like everything was falling into place.

“Still wasn’t enough. This shit, sometimes, will be the highest highs and lowest lows and it will really make you question what you believe in. But I’ve been through a lot of shit in my life. This ain’t really gonna be shit.”

With this loss to Rafael dos Anjos, Kevin Lee is now on a two-fight skid. Prior to his losses to dos Anjos and Iaquinta, he picked up one of the best wins of his career, smashing Edson Barboza. In his bout before that, he came up short in an interim lightweight title fight with Tony Ferguson.

Where do you think Kevin Lee will go from here?
