Kamaru Usman’s complaints post-UFC OKC are ‘nonsense,’ says Dricus du Plessis’ coach: “Dricus could have finished him”

Kamaru Usman’s talk of a possible eye poke at UFC OKC don’t have merit if you ask Dricus du Plessis’ coach.

Usman and du Plessis recently shared the Octagon for five rounds inside Paycom Center in Oklahoma. The middleweight bout swayed in the favor of “Stillknocks,” who many believe had his best overall performance to date. Du Plessis was credited for taking a more measured approach than his past outings, and it led to a unanimous decision win.

In the aftermath of UFC OKC, Usman seemed to be pretty sure that he got a finger in his eye at some point during the match. The commentary team claimed that replays showed it was du Plessis’ knuckle that got in the eye, which of course isn’t a foul.

Morne Visser is du Plessis’ longtime coach, and he told “Submission Radio” that Usman’s suspicion of a foul has no legs. He even believes his fighter could’ve finished “The Nigerian Nightmare” (h/t MMAJunkie).

“So, I am super, super happy with our results. I think this is the best I’ve seen Dricus ever or the world has seen him ever. This was a high-pressure fight. I mean, this was our comeback fight after 10, 11 months off. So, I’m very happy. And he listened. We never pushed for anything. We never pushed once for the finish, not even once. I mean, you saw Kamaru complaining about a low blow and the thumb or the finger, all nonsense. Dricus could have finished him there, but he was just not pushing. He was just respectful.”

In the aftermath of UFC OKC, du Plessis has been calling for another UFC middleweight title fight, but he’s willing to face whoever gets him closer to being back in the mix. The former 185-pound titleholder has two wins over reigning champion Sean Strickland, but the odds of a trilogy at this time are quite slim.

As for Usman, he has yet to commit to a weight class for his next fight. Retired MMA personality Chael Sonnen believes “The Nigerian Nightmare” should stick around in the middleweight division.
