Gilbert Burns isn’t sold on Colby Covington’s post-UFC 296 injury claims: “He was going everywhere here”
Gilbert Burns has called Colby Covington’s foot injury into question.
Covington was widely panned for his performance against Leon Edwards in the main event of UFC 296 in late 2023. “Chaos” didn’t have the forward pressure that he’s been known for throughout his pro MMA career. Many, including UFC CEO Dana White, wondered if being largely inactive prior to the welterweight title fight cost Covington an undisputed UFC championship.
The former interim UFC welterweight titleholder insists he fractured his left foot in the opening frame, but “Durinho” isn’t buying it.

Colby Covington Grilled By Gilbert Burns Over Injury Claims
During an interview with TheAllStar, Gilbert Burns shared his belief that after seeing Colby Covington walk around after UFC 296, he isn’t sold on “Chaos'” injury claims (via MMAFighting).
“I don’t think he — he was going everywhere here,” Burns told The AllStar. “I saw him walking everywhere. The X-ray, I don’t see his name on the X-ray. I don’t know. Then we saw him walk everywhere in Miami, playing poker, going everywhere. I didn’t see no cast, I didn’t see anything. So, I don’t know.
“It’s very hard to believe anything Colby says. You don’t know when it’s true, he’s a character. I just think a lot of guys said he didn’t show up [in the fight]. I think he did show up, but I think Leon just shut him down and I think Leon is — people don’t give him a lot of credit, but I think he’s very, very good. He just shut the guy down.”
With Covington out of the UFC welterweight title picture, he will need to focus on other 170-pounders. He has already targeted “Wonderboy” Stephen Thompson as a potential opponent. Time will tell if the UFC matchmakers agree.
