Derek Brunson is hoping to get a rematch with Robert Whittaker.

Ever since Brunson pulled off an upset win over Edmen Shahbazyan he has been looking to fight a top contender. He has called out Paulo Costa but that appears unlikely to happen so the top-10 contender is looking to rematch Whittaker.

“I can’t get a fight with someone who’s surging. @robwhittakermma what you say we run it back. 4 years later. That first fight was disrespectful. I tried to bully you and that didn’t work. @ufc @Mickmaynard2 @danawhite,” Brunson tweeted.

The two first met in November of 2016. Both men on a lengthy winning streak and many thought the winner would get a title shot. Early on, Brunson tried to walk down Whittaker and throw everything at him but he eventually got caught and knocked out in the first round. However, it was a very exciting fight and it was the Fight of the Night so years after the loss, he believes the rematch should happen.

Derek Brunson, as mentioned, is coming off a third-round TKO win over Edmen Shahbazyan in the main event of UFC Vegas 5. It was his third win in a row after beating Ian Heinisch and Elias Theodorou by decision. The wins snapped his losing skid after being knocked out by Israel Adesanya and Jacare Souza.

Robert Whittaker, meanwhile, is on a two-fight winning streak after beating Jared Cannonier and Darren Till by decision. Before that, he suffered a second-round TKO loss to Israel Adesanya to lose his middleweight title.

Although Whittaker is hoping to get the rematch with Adesanya, a fight against Brunson certainly makes sense. “The Last Stylebender” is moving up in weight and likely won’t fight at middleweight until mid to late 2021. So, if Whittaker wants to remain busy having a rematch with Derek Brunson in a Fight Night main event could be a realistic scenario.
