Conor McGregor’s coach disagrees with weight limit for UFC 326 fight between Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira

Conor McGregor’s coach isn’t a fan of Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira having to cut weight for a BMF title fight.

Weight cutting has long been a hot topic in MMA. The sport has seen its share of scary incidents on weigh-in day and fight cancellations. Cameron Smotherman’s recent collapse during early morning weigh-ins left the door open for even more debates.

John Kavanagh, McGregor’s longtime coach, has taken to X to share his belief that the UFC 326 main event between Holloway and Oliveira shouldn’t have a lightweight limit.

“2 incredible warriors, will be a great fight. But its a lil strange both will cut huge amount of weight to be the BMF. Why not leave it ‘open weight’ and UFC pick 2 guys who have similar natural weights. In this case both are let’s say 180ish….will cut to 155 then back to 180ish….why not skip the weight cutting part and fight 180ish.”

Some argue that the fight has to be contested at 155 pounds because there are significant implications for the lightweight title picture. A win for Holloway or Oliveira could lead to a title shot depending on what ultimately transpires in the weeks and months that follow UFC 326. Injuries and other unforeseen circumstances often plague matchmaking.

Holloway recently told Stake.com that if he emerges victorious over Oliveira on Saturday, then he wouldn’t mind running things back with McGregor. While the “Notorious” one has insisted he will fight again, nothing has been made official on his first fight since 2021.

McGregor defeated Holloway via unanimous decision back Aug. 2013, which was long before either fighter entered the prime of their careers. McGregor also suffered a torn ACL during the fight.
