In 2017, Conor McGregor found himself in hot water after getting physical with referee Marc Goddard amid some confusion during his teammate Charlie Ward’s fight.
As it turns out, this is not the first time the Irishman had an issue with Goddard.
In a 2012 Cage Warriors fight, the McGregor fought England’s Dave Hill. Goddard was serving as one of Hill’s cornermen, and according to McGregor, he behaved quite unprofessionally.
Conor McGregor commented on this 2012 incident with Marc Goddard on Twitter, speaking in response to a commemorative video from Cage Warriors.
“What a great milestone in Irish MMA’s history! The behavior of Britain’s Marc Goddard in the corner that night was horrendous. Burst into the cage and attacked referee Neil Hall in between rounds. The fight was still in play! Crazy behavior for an up and coming referee! Anyway”– Conor McGregor on Twitter.
Needless to say, McGregor and Goddard seem to have some history together. Based on that history, it’s unlikely we’ll ever see the English referee officiate any of McGregor’s fights in the future.
Of course, McGregor’s fighting future is still a mystery. While the Irishman has recently suggested he intends to fight again, there hasn’t been any movement with respect to his next bout in some time. He’s also dealing with a hand injury.
It’s also possible that McGregor’s next fight will occur in the boxing ring. Speaking on Twitter on Saturday, amid the excitement of Andy Ruiz and Katie Taylor’s big victories, he once again challenge Floyd Mayweather to a rematch.
Boxing is great, I am going to relish another go!
I challenge Juan Manuel Mayweather to a rematch.
Under the tutelage of my old club.
We’ll see then mate.
