Alexander Volkanovski calls for money fight against Conor McGregor

Despite being next in line for a featherweight title shot later this year against the winner of UFC 240’s Max Holloway vs. Frankie Edgar, top-ranked contender Alexander Volkanovski has his sights set on a money fight against Conor McGregor.

“Oh mate, I would love that,” Volkanovski said (via TheBodyLockMMA.com). “Again, money, money, money. I know he’s game. I’ll be completely different problems that he’s never dealt with, as well. I’m a pretty bad matchup for him.”

Alexander Volkanovski (20-1) is currently riding a 17-fight win streak. He has a perfect 7-0 record in the UFC, including a career-best decision win over Jose Aldo at UFC 237 in Brazil in his last fight. He also holds notable victories over Chad Mendes and Darren Elkins. The 30-year-old Aussie is undoubtedly one of the top featherweights in the world, and many expected him to be the next in line to fight Holloway for the title at UFC 240.

Instead, the UFC went with Edgar, and now Volkanovski has to wait. Of course he still wants to win the title, but you can’t blame him for wanting to make the most money while he can, and McGregor is the biggest money fight out there, not to mention a fight that Volkanovski believes he’ll win despite the dangers of McGregor’s KO power.

“I’m not the type that is just going to come in and he’ll catch me. I’m going to be a lot harder for him to draw me in like that, and then he’s got my wrestling to worry about,” Alexander Volkanovski said about a potential matchup against McGregor. “Once I get him going and my rhythm, then I’m putting my pressure, then he’s worried about everything. I believe I’m a similar style to Khabib Nurmagomedov when it comes to the ground and stuff, but I believe I’ve got a whole other, higher level of striking. But I mean, that’d be some serious money, I’d love that.”
