The fight, which is slated to be against dynamic striker Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, is one that has fight fans split down the middle in regards to who they think will win. From a rankings standpoint, there could be no other option for that first defense than the streaking Stephen Thompson. When Thompson’s name came up, however, Woodley made no secret of the fact that this prospective fight didn’t really interest him.

“Last week, the UFC’s Fight Pass Twitter page made an egregious faux paux when they tweeted a link celebrating Nate Marquart’s 2012 knockout of Tyron Woodley for the vacant Strikeforce welterweight belt before the promotion was folded into the UFC. The tweet came on the heels of an announcement of a fight between Marquardt and Tamdan McRory, with the caption reading:

In addition to Tyron Woodley going into his UFC 205 title fight with Stephen Thompson, in the UFC’s historic inaugural event at the Madison Square Garden, with the UFC welterweight championship, he’s also going into the fight as an underdog. After the fight was announced earlier this month, current betting odds on Bovada have Woodley as a +150 underdog ahead of the fight, with Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson coming in as a -185 favorite.

Woodley knocked out Robbie Lawler in the main event of UFC 201 in July, however according to ‘The Chosen One’ he hasn’t been celebrated as a champion. After winning the belt, Woodley revealed in an interview that racist fans had emerged and were frequently making racist comments to him on social media.

When Woodley stole Lawler’s title with a blistering, first-round KO, however, Thompson’s future became far less clear. At the same time, he expressed a complete disinterest in Thompson being his first title challenger. After White announced that Thompson would be the first challenger to Woodley’s welterweight championship, Woodley took to Twitter to point out that a contract for a fight with Thompson hasn’t been finalized.
