When Stephen Thompson defeated former UFC welterweight title holder Johny Hendricks via first-round TKO at last month’s UFC Fight Night 82 event, he was hoping that the UFC would grant him with a title shot against current champ Robbie Lawler. Instead, the UFC opted to match “Wonder Boy” up against former title challenger and ‘close friend’ Rory MacDonald in a fight which will serve as the main event for the UFC’s debut in Ottawa, Canada on June 18.

During today’s UFC Unstoppable press conference, UFC president Dana White announced that a key welterweight bout between Stephen Thompson and Rory MacDonald will headline June’s UFC Fight Night 89 event in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Stephen Thompson is coming off a spectacular showing against former title holder Johny Hendricks, whom he TKO’d in the very first-round at UFC Fight Night 82. The victory marked “Wonder Boy’s” sixth-straight win inside of the octagon.

Thompson showed that his style of kickboxing works against elite level wrestlers such as Johny Hendricks as he picked up an impressive 1st round TKO win. With the win over Hendricks, Thompson found himself in an interesting position in a stacked UFC welterweight division. After Johny Hendricks was hospitalized due to a weight-cut mishap at UFC 192, the UFC promised Tyron Woodley the next fight against welterweight champion Robbie Lawler. However after the controversial split decision at UFC 195, Carlos Condit is campaigning for a rematch with Robbie Lawler.

When Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson signed the initial contract to fight Johny Hendricks at UFC 196 the fight was scheduled for 3 rounds and was to serve as the co-main event. Last month Cain Velasquez withdrew from his main event scrap with Fabricio Werdum due to a back injury. The UFC replaced Velasquez with Stipe Miocic, however Fabricio Werdum then withdrew from the bout with a back injury. Werdum caught criticism for withdrawing from the bout before revealing that he also has a broken foot.
