Report | Tyron Woodley and Robbie Lawler agree to rematch as UFC Minneapolis headliner

By Drake Riggs - March 27, 2019

Following UFC 235 and former UFC welterweight champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler’s (18-3) somewhat controversial first-round submission loss to Ben Askren, the idea from UFC President Dana White was to run the fight back as soon as possible. Well, one of Lawler’s old fights will be ran back alright… But it won’t be that one.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto has since reported that verbal agreements are in place for Lawler to rematch with Askren’s good friend and teammate, the man who dethroned Lawler, Tyron Woodley (19-4-1) at UFC Minneapolis on June 29.

“Breaking: Tyron Woodley (@TWooodley) vs Robbie Lawler (@Ruthless_RL) verbally agreed to headline UFC Fight Night on June 29 in Milwaukee.” Okamoto tweeted mistakenly saying Milwaukee.

For the always entertaining Lawler, he is currently 1-3 in his last four outings. The first loss to kick off the slide began with Woodley in July 2016 when they headlined UFC 201. Woodley only needed two minutes and 12 seconds to catch Lawler with a big knockout punch that kicked off “The Chosen One’s” title reign.

At UFC 235 earlier this month, Woodley would end up losing his title to Kamaru Usman via lopsided unanimous decision. For the former champ, his last loss prior to that came at UFC 174 in 2014 against the now Bellator champ, Rory MacDonald.

During his title reign, Woodley would go 3-0-1 with his last defense coming in dominant fashion against the then-unbeaten Darren Till at UFC 228 in September 2018.

When Lawler returned to welcome Askren to the UFC Octagon at UFC 235, it was his first bout in over a year as he suffered a torn ACL in his collision with Rafael Dos Anjos in December 2017. And although he would end up losing to the former Bellator and ONE Championship king, Lawler still looked as “Ruthless” as ever.
