It looks like UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor’s choice to give Nate Diaz their fight at welterweight may have been a planned tactic for a fight with UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler. “I mean, why not? That’s probably the leading option,” McGregor said during the open workouts on Wednesday (transcribed by MMA Fighting).

It’s no secret that Conor McGregor had a brutal weight cut when he was dropping down to fight at featherweight. Ahead of McGregor’s fight with Nate Diaz on Saturday at UFC 196, which will go down at welterweight, a member of The UnderGround compared the size of McGregor prior to UFC 194 with the size of McGregor before UFC 196 on Saturday.

After it was announced that Nate Diaz would be stepping in for Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196, the UFC held a ‘UFC 196: McGregor vs. Diaz’ press conference the very next day. McGregor and Diaz put on a verbal show for the fans as they talked trash for nearly 30 minutes straight! Over the course of the press conference, McGregor called Diaz a “cholo” and mocked him for teaching Jiu-Jitsu seminars to kids.

Back in January at ‘UFC Fight Night: Dillashaw vs. Cruz’ Matt Mitrione suffered one of the most gruesome eye injuries in the history of MMA at the hands of Travis Browne. Mitrione was poked in the same eye twice by Browne, which subsequently lead to him being unable to see out of that eye. Due to this, Mitrione couldn’t see a punch coming and had his orbital broken.
