Since Conor McGregor’s 2nd round submission loss to Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 196 last week, it was revealed that McGregor would be returning to featherweight to defend his championship. This week UFC President Dana White visited with McGregor, and revealed McGregor’s intentions to defend his featherweight championship at UFC 200 in July. With that being said, the decision of who he will defend the belt against is not an easy one for the UFC brass.

Prior to UFC 196, where Nate Diaz stepped in on short notice to fight Conor McGregor in a welterweight showdown, it was revealed that Diaz would make $500,000 for the fight regardless of whether or not he won.

This past Saturday at UFC 196, Conor McGregor suffered the first defeat of his UFC career at the hands of Nate Diaz. McGregor looked noticeably gassed in the second round, which subsequently lead to Diaz rocking the featherweight champ and ultimately submitting him. Immediately following the fight, McGregor chalked it up to an inefficient use of his energy. Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm was likely just a minute and a half away from defending her belt for the first time in a fight against Miesha Tate at UFC 196. Holm fought off Tate who had a dominant second round and nearly secured a rear-naked choke submission on the only fighter to win world titles both in boxing and in the UFC. Holm ultimately lost in the fifth round when Tate was able to gain position and take Holm’s back again sinking in a deep rear-naked choke. Holm showed a never give up attitude without tapping and went unconscious due to the choke.

It has been confirmed by UFC President Dana White that UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor will be fighting at UFC 200. With that being said, there is still much speculation as to who McGregor will fight at the historic event. McGregor has stated that he wants to defend his featherweight championship at UFC 200, however both Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar have strong cases for deserving a title shot.

This was likely to keep McGregor’s options open based on the outcome of his UFC 196 scrap. Of course as everyone knows by now, Nate Diaz defeated McGregor at UFC 196.
