At UFC 197, Jon Jones made his successful return to the Octagon and claimed the interim UFC light heavyweight championship by defeating Ovince Saint Preux via unanimous decision. Saint Preux took the fight on short notice, and earned the respect of many fans for lasting 5 rounds with Jones on such short notice.

UFC featherweight Diego Brandao has found himself in a world of trouble after an alleged incident in Albuquerque, New Mexico that resulted in his arrest. “The Ultimate Fighter 14” winner was arrested on April 14th after an incident outside of a strip club. Brandao allegedly pointed a gun at several people and pistol whipped an employee of the club. Brandao was charged with three felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and another for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Recently news broke that MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko would be returning to MMA in front of his native Russian fans when he fights UFC veteran Fabio Maldonado under the Fight Nights Global banner in June. Ahead of the fight, a shocking detail emerged that there would be no PED testing ahead of, or the night of, the fight. Following that announcement, Maldonado admitted to BloodyElbow that he had been using PEDs during the last stretch of his UFC career, and that he plans to do so in his upcoming fight against Emelianenko.

Women’s MMA is still growing and Joanne Calderwood (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) and Valerie Letourneau (8-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) are stamping their place in UFC history at UFC Fight Night 89. Dada 500 posted a photo of himself from when he was in the hospital to get a grasp of the gravity of the situation.

UFC Hall of Fame legend BJ Penn also makes his return to the Octagon against Dennis Siver in a featherweight bout. The UFC returns to the state of California for their first event since the California State Athletic Commission has enforced newly placed rules to combat dangerous weight cutting and dehydration.

Conor McGregor’s very public dispute with the UFC has many members of the MMA community passively choosing sides. While some members of the MMA community believe the McGregor is obligated to fulfill his media obligations ahead of UFC 200, because promo is part of his job, others like Don Frye believe that McGregor’s job is to fight, not promote fights. Conor McGregor’s ongoing contract dispute with the UFC has taken quite a few turns since McGregor announced his retirement from the sport two weeks ago. The featherweight champ was pulled from UFC 200 for refusing to fulfill his media obligations, and it appeared as though there was no chance he would be put back on the card. McGregor then Tweeted earlier this week that he was back on the card, leading to much confusion. The UFC then revealed that McGregor was not back on the card, leading to much fan frustration.

While Conor McGregor was just pulled from UFC 200 less than 2 weeks ago, Nate Diaz believes that McGregor was never actually in the fight. McGregor announced his retirement on social media, leaving many fans confused. UFC President Dana White then announced on SportsCenter that McGregor had been pulled from UFC 200 for refusing to fulfill his media obligations for the event. While there has been quite a bit of back-and-forth between McGregor and the UFC, the UFC brass has stuck to their guns and refused to give into McGregor’s demands.

At UFC 200 on July 9th, Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar will fight for the interim UFC featherweight championship, with the winner facing Conor McGregor for the undisputed featherweight championship at a later date. Aldo and Edgar met once before at UFC 156 back in 2013 for Aldo’s featherweight championship. Ultimately, Aldo was given the nod in the fight, which was awarded Fight of the Night honors.

The fight will mark the second time that Edgar and Aldo have gone to battle inside the octagon. “The Answer” suffered a unanimous decision loss to Aldo in the main event of UFC 156 in February 2013.
