UFN 89 Results: Donald Cerrone TKO's Patrick Cote

A welterweight bout between former lightweight title challenger Donald Cerrone and former middleweight title challenger Patrick Cote served as the co-main attraction of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 89 event in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Round one begins and Cote opens fire with a leg kick. He follows up with a nice left hand. Cerrone shoots in and lands a big takedown on Patrick. “Cowboy” begins working from full guard. He lands some shots to the body of Cote. Patrick is able to scramble and get back to his feet. Cote with a leg kick. He lands a shot to the body of Cerrone. “Cowboy” returns fire with a kick of his own. A big kick lands for Cerrone. He shoots in and scores a second takedown. Donald is working from half guard now. He takes the back of Cote. He sinks in both hooks. Patrick tries to stand up. Cerrone threatens with a choke which forces Cote back down. Cerrone locks in a body triangle. “Cowboy” is looking for a rear-naked choke. Cote looks for a Kimura. Cerrone escapes and stands up. He kicks the legs of Cote to end round one.

A light heavyweight bout between Steve Bosse (12-2 MMA) and Sean O’Connell (17-8 MMA) took place on tonight’s UFC Fight Night 89 main card in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Round one begins and Bosse lands a big right hand. O’Connell fires back with a huge left. Bosse with another massive right hand. O’Connell replies with a leg kick. Bosse with a right hand. O’Connell rocks him with a counter. He lands another massive punch that drops Bosse. He follows Steve to the ground and starts unloading. Bosse somehow survives and returns to his feet. Bosse lands a huge right on O’Connell. Sean eats it and presses forward. He lands a leg kick on Steve. O’Connell with back to back big left hands. He follows up with a right. Bosse replies with a knee against the fence. O’Connell presses Bosse against the cage and fires an elbow. Bosse with some short shots to the body. He gets free and lands some big uppercuts to the body. Bosse hits Sean with a big left hook. These guys are tough as nails. Bosse with an uppercut and then a spinning back fist. O’Connell absorbs the punishment and clinches up. Bosse presses him against the fence and shoots for a takedown. It is not there. Round one comes to an end.

A lightweight bout between Olivier Aubin-Mercier (9-2 MMA) and Thibault Gouti (11-2 MMA) took place on tonight’s UFC Fight Night 89 main card in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Round one begins and Gouti lands a jab to start. Aubin-Mercier shoots in for a single leg. It is not there. He presses Gouti against the fence. They break Thibault lands a nice right. Aubin-Mercier shoots in again but can’t grab a hold of the Frenchman. Nice head kick from Olivier. And another. Gouti with a nice jab. Aubin-Mercier with a solid body kick. He shoots in for a double-leg and gets the takedown. He moves to half guard. Olivier with a nice left hand from the top. Gouti is defending well but Aubin-Mercier is smothering him. A nice right hand scores for Olivier. He takes the back of Gouti. He lands some good shots. Aubin-Mercier looks for a leg lock. Gouti winds up on top and lands a big blow. Olivier looks hurt but is able to recover and get back to his feet. Gouti with a nice combo that ends with an uppercut. Aubin-Mercier with a nice high kick. Gouti presses forward with a huge combination. Round one comes to an end.

A women’s flyweight bout between Valerie Letourneau (8-5 MMA) and Joanne Calderwood (11-1 MMA) kicked off the UFC Fight Night 89 main card in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Round one begins and Calderwood opens up with a leg kick. Letourneau returns fire with a punch-kick combo. Calderwood with a leg kick and then a kick to the body. The fighters clinch up. Joanne presses Valerie against the fence. Letourneau spins Calderwood around and lands some knees. Calderwood scores a trip and winds up in top position. Valerie is looking to lock up an armbar. Joanne pulls her arms out. Letourneau with another armbar attempt, she uses the submission to stand back up. Calderwood with a leg kick. The fighters clinch. Valerie with an uppercut. Calderwood with a body kick. Good combination lands for Valerie. Joanne with a front kick. She lands a huge spinning back fist the drops Letourneau. Calderwood rushes in and starts landing bombs. The Canadian is trying to fight back. She gets a hold of Calderwood and is able to recover. Unbelievable heart shown by Valerie here. She is able to get back to her feet. She eats a front kick to the face from Joanne. Calderwood lands a jab. Valerie returns fire with a right hand and then a leg kick. Joanne lands a big right and then an elbow. Round one comes to an end.

A light heavyweight bout between Misha Cirkunov and Ion Cutelaba took place on the UFC Fight Night 89 prelims in Ottawa. Round one begins and Cirkunov lands a big left hand. The Canadian presses forward and gets hit with a big right hand from Cutelaba. Ion is circling and pawing with his jab. Cirkunov is pressing forward and lands a right hand. He follows up with a big left. Cutelaba eats it. Ion lands a takedown and winds up in mount. Cirkunov quickly escapes the position and stands back up. The fighters clinch up and Cirkunov tries to land a trip. It is not there. The fighters break and Ion lands a jab. Nice left hand from Cirkunov. Round one comes to an end.

A middleweight bout between Tamdan McCrory and Krzysztof Jotko took place on the UFC Fight Night 89 prelims in Ottawa. Round one begins and McCrory presses forward and lands a kick to the body. Tamdan continues to move forward and Jotko lands a huge left hand that drops “The Barn Cat”. Jotko follows up with hammer fists and McCrory is out cold. This one is over.

A bantamweight bout between Chris Beal and Joe Soto took place on the UFC Fight Night 89 prelims in Ottawa. Chris Beal began the fight by picking apart his competitor Joe Soto. However, after Joe ate a number of huge shots in the opening two rounds, he was able to take Beal to the ground in round three where he promptly sunk in a rear-naked choke that forced Chris to tap.

A middleweight bout between Elias Theodorou and Sam Alvey served as the featured bout of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 89 Fight Pass prelims in Ottawa. Round one begins and Theodorou misses with a high kick. Alvey has his left hand locked and loaded. Elias lands a leg kick. And then another. Theodorou with another leg kick as he circles away from Alvey. He is doing a great job of keeping Sam at distance. Another leg kick from Elias. He misses with a body kick. Elias with another leg kick. He follows that up with a front kick. Alvey throws a left that misses. Theodorou continues to use his kicks to keep Sam at distance. Another good leg kick from Elias. Sam is trying to close the distance. He lands a nice leg kick. Elias replies with a kick to the body and another. Theodorou has been all kicks and movement in round one. Alvey ends the round by finally landing a punch.
UFN 89 Results: Colby Covington submits Jonathan Meunier

Colby Covington (9-1 MMA) and Jonathan Meunier (7-1 MMA) squared off in the second bout of UFC Fight Night 89 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Covington was able to dominate round one by utilizing some solid takedowns to control the round. He landed a couple of decent shots from the top, but it was ultimately his five takedowns that gave him the opening round.

A flyweight bout between Ali Bagautinov (14-4 MMA) and Geane Herrera (9-2 MMA) kicked off tonight’s UFC Fight Night 89 event in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Bagautinov came out on fire in the bout’s opening round, scoring some terrific strikes while standing before eventually taking Herrera to the ground. The former title challenger landed some excellent ground and pound before the bell rang to end round one.
Anthony Johnson reportedly out of July 23rd right with Glover Teixeira

Unfortunate news surfaced Saturday afternoon that light heavyweight title contender Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson had withdrawn from his ‘UFC on FOX: Chicago’ scrap against Glover Teixeira on July 23rd. Ariel Helwani broke the news via Twitter, which didn’t give a reason for Johnson’s withdrawal. So far there has been no word yet on whether or not the UFC will look to find a replacement opponent for Teixeira, or if they will look to move the bout to a later date.

Michael Bisping has been on cloud 9 since winning the UFC middleweight championship against Luke Rockhold earlier this month in the main event of UFC 199. Bisping stepped in on just 2 weeks notice for Chris Weidman, who was forced out of the bout with a neck injury, and ultimately knocked out Luke Rockhold in the first round. On the heels of his welcome back party at the Fox Sports 1 studio, Bisping took the middleweight strap home to Manchester, where he visited Old Trafford, home of the Manchester United football club.

The fight saw MacDonald up 3-1 on the judges scorecards going into the 5th round. Lawler ended up coming out strong in the 5th round, knocking out MacDonald to retain the championship in devastating fashion.
