Earlier this month, top ranked welterweight contender Stephen Thompson stepped into the Octagon with welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in the co-main event of UFC 205 for a highly anticipated showdown. The fight was an extremely close one, with many scoring the fight three rounds to two in Thompson’s favor, but giving Woodley a 10-8 round in the fourth round. This ultimately led to the fight being scored a majority draw, with Woodley retaining his welterweight championship.

Leading up to Conor McGregor’s UFC 205 scrap with Eddie Alvarez earlier this month at UFC 205, the featherweight champ was involved in quite a few backstage incidents with welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. To kick off fight week, both men appeared alongside several other of the fighters from the historic card for the UFC 205 press conference. During the course of the event, McGregor stole Eddie Alvarez’ lightweight championship, stirring up quite a bit of controversy. Following the stunt, McGregor proclaimed that he was coming for all the belts on the stage, which included Tyron Woodley’s welterweight championship.

Cormier’s withdrawal was unexpected, but fortunately will not keep the champ sidelined for too long, as details have emerged on the situation, revealing that ‘DC’ is targeting a March return to the Octagon. With Cormier now off the card, there has been speculation as to what the UFC will do to compensate for the lack of a title fight in the main event of the Pay-Per View card despite the fact that the promotion is currently looking for a replacement opponent for Johnson.

The recipient of this callout was current heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, who he defeated with a narrow decision back in late 2014. Friday morning, news surfaced that UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier had been forced to withdraw from his highly anticipated UFC 206 showdown with Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson on December 10th in Toronto, Canada. The fight was set to be a rematch from UFC 187 in 2015, where Cormier defeated Johnson to win the vacant light heavyweight championship. Johnson was initially slated to fight Jon Jones on the card, however Jones was involved in an infamous hit-and-run incident that saw him suspended and stripped of the title, ultimately leading the UFC to booking Cormier vs. Johnson for the vacant light heavyweight championship.

Just hours ago, news broke that light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier had been forced out of his UFC 206 bout with Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. Given that this bout was expected to serve as the card’s headliner, the UFC will now have to scramble to produce a new main event for the fans attending the event live in Toronto, and those watching it live on screens around the world. When weighing the options for a new main event for UFC 206, the most obvious course of action seems to be finding a replacement opponent for Rumble. The problem here is that Rumble has already defeated most eligible replacement opponents, from Alexander Gustafsson, to Jimi Manuwa, to Ryan Bader to Glover Teixeira. Furthermore, the top contender has suggested he’s not interested in fighting for an interim title, which makes securing a replacement bout for him an even more difficult task.

Back at UFC 205, former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate suffered a unanimous decision loss to Raquel Pennington on the main card of the historic event. For Tate, the loss made it two in a row following her UFC 200 loss to Amanda Nunes, where she lost the women’s bantamweight championship in the very first round after being rocked and then submitted with a rear naked choke.
