For a time, Chris Weidman looked like he was going to be come a truly dominant champion. First, he knocked out Anderson Silva to win the UFC middleweight title. Then, he defeated Silva again – albeit thanks to a freakish leg injury – erasing any doubt that he deserved his station atop the middleweight division. Next, he defeated Lyoto Machida in a thrilling, five-round war. And finally, he took out a bona fide MMA legend in Vitor Belfort, marking his third-straight defense of the middleweight title. Indeed, it looked like it could be the beginning of a legendary reign for the talented American star.

Later this year, at a to-be-determined date, UFC middleweight champ Michael Bisping will attempt to defend his title against former welterweight king Georges St-Pierre, who is returning from a long hiatus from competition. While this fight has got some members of the MMA community very excited, it’s generated criticism from others for the way it deprives the top middleweight contenders of the title shots they deserve. During a recent appearance on UFC Tonight, former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold offered his own criticism of this booking, suggesting that it could set a dangerous precedent, as legitimate ranking-driven matchmaking gives way to a focus on so-called “money fights”.

Shortly after his thunderous, first-round knockout of Andrei Arlovski, rising heavyweight contender Francis Ngannou issued callouts of three of the division’s top fighters: Cain Velasquez, Junior Dos Santos, and Alistair Overeem. Yet when Ben Rothwell was forced out of a scheduled bout with Brazil’s Fabricio Werdum, leaving Werdum without an opponent, the Brazilian became Ngannou’s primary target. Ngannou has some competition in his quest for a fight with Werdum. That competition comes from an unlikely source in former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold, who has beef with Werdum stemming from their days fighting under the Strikeforce banner.

UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk has quietly emerged as one of the most dominant champions in the UFC. She has now defended her title four times, and is preparing for a fifth defense of that title, as she’s scheduled for a title fight with the dangerous Jessica Andrade in the co-main event of May’s UFC 211. Despite the fact that the two fighters have had a friendly relationship in the past, Andrade and her camp have made several negative comments about Jedrzejczyk in the buildup to this fight.

Former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks once reigned as the UFC welterweight champion. With that being said, Bigg Rig is coming off a successful UFC middleweight debut which saw him pick up a decision win over Hector Lombard earlier this year. Despite Hendricks success at 170, the former welterweight champion was forced to move up to 185 by UFC President Dana White after being unable to make the welterweight non-title fight limit of 171 pounds on several occasions. While it wasn’t long ago that Hendricks mentioned the possibility of retirement, he is now looking to build momentum at 185 when he fights Tim Boetsch on June 25th.

UFC lightweight veteran Dustin Poirier is currently gearing up for arguably the biggest fight of his professional MMA career, where he will fight former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in a highly anticipated showdown at UFC 211 on May 13th. In the fight, Poirier will be looking to build on his recent majority decision win over Jim Miller at UFC 208, which saw him bounce back from a September KO loss to Michael Johnson, which snapped a 4-fight win streak that saw ‘Diamond’ quickly climb the UFC lightweight rankings. On the other hand, Eddie Alvarez will be looking to bounce back from his recent UFC 205 loss to Conor McGregor, where he was TKOd in the 2nd round to lose his lightweight title.

Recently, MMA veteran Vitor Belfort suggested in an interview that the UFC look to create a ‘legends league’ for retired legends of the sport to compete in, so as to satisfy their desire for competition despite being retired. Belfort revealed that his suggestion to the new UFC owners was not only one that would appease retired UFC legends, but could also bring in more money for the promotion at a time when the new WME-IMG owners have been looking to cut expenses while boosting revenue.
