Unfortunately, a serious health issue forced him out of this fight, leaving the middleweight title picture mired in uncertainty. Whittaker and Gastelum’s fight is now expected to be rescheduled for sometime later this year, and top middleweight contender Israel Adesanya plans to wait for his shot at the winner.

Back in January, UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov was finally disciplined for his role in the wild brawl that followed his UFC 229 victory over Conor McGregor. The Dagestani champion received a $500,000 fine and a nine-month suspension, which can be reduced to six months if he completes an anti-bullying PSA approved by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). Nurmagomedov will not be partaking in the NSAC’s proposed PSA — he recently made his thoughts on that quite clear. Furthermore, the champ actually plans to sit out until November, standing in solidarity with his teammates Zubaira Tukhugov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov, who were suspended for one year for their roles in the brawl.

Mid-way through the first round of a compelling UFC 234 light heavyweight contest, Australia’s Jim Crute rocked his foe Sam Alvey, leaving the American on spaghetti legs. With Alvey hurt, Crute quickly swarmed to force a stoppage, and eventually got one. Yet many onlookers felt that stoppage came a little too early — that includes UFC President Dana White. Last night, in the co-main event of UFC 234, middleweight legend Anderson Silva lost a decision to surging middleweight contender Israel Adesanya — but he’s not ready to hang up the gloves quite yet. Instead, Silva is hoping to return to the cage at UFC 237, which goes down this May in Curitiba, Brazil. Post-fight, the Brazilian reiterated his desire to fight on this card, and named Nick Diaz, who he battled to a no contest in 2015, as potential opponent.

A lightweight bout between Marcos Rosa Mariano and Lando Vannata co-headlined tonight’s UFC 234 event in Melbourne, Australia. Round one begins and Mariano starts things off with a high kick and then a front kick. Vannata responds with a low kick. Lando with some pressure now. He backs Mariano against the cage. Marcos with a body kick and then a spinning attack. Vannata avoids and both men land low kicks. Vannata gets inside and lands a big takedown. He begins working from guard and landing some elbows. Vannata with some good ground and pound. Mariona is trying to hang on here. Big shots from Lando. Punches and elbows. Vannata ends up in north-south position and secures a kimura. He cranks the submission hold and this one is all over.
