Vitor Belfort says "fake champion" Michael Bisping has been his "only easy fight"

Tom Taylor - March 27, 2017

Earlier this month, aging MMA legend Vitor Belfort was knocked senseless by a younger, faster, stronger fighter in Kelvin Gastelum. In the wake of this decisive loss, the declining legend explained that he would like to fulfill the last fight on his contract before retiring – ideally at UFC 212 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this June. Shortly thereafter, Belfort generated headlines by suggesting he’d like his retirement fight to be against former WWE star CM Punk – a welterweight with almost no martial arts experience, and a 0-1 professional MMA record. Unsurprisingly, this callout generated some negative responses from the MMA community – including one from notoriously outspoken middleweight champ Michael Bisping.

Luke Rockhold criticizes UFC for fights like Bisping vs. GSP: this could easily get out of hand

Tom Taylor - March 26, 2017

Later this year, at a to-be-determined date, UFC middleweight champ Michael Bisping will attempt to defend his title against former welterweight king Georges St-Pierre, who is returning from a long hiatus from competition. While this fight has got some members of the MMA community very excited, it’s generated criticism from others for the way it deprives the top middleweight contenders of the title shots they deserve. During a recent appearance on UFC Tonight, former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold offered his own criticism of this booking, suggesting that it could set a dangerous precedent, as legitimate ranking-driven matchmaking gives way to a focus on so-called “money fights”.

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping is currently gearing up for his 2017 showdown with UFC icon Georges St-Pierre. That scrap, which has yet to receive an official date, will see Bisping look to defend his middleweight strap for the second time as he faces the returning Georges St-Pierre. While fight fans are certainly ecstatic for the fight, middleweight #1 contender Yoel Romero isn’t too happy about being passed up for the title shot UFC President Dana White promised him. With Bisping currently set to fight GSP, Romero called for an interim middleweight title.

The news that the next crack at Michael Bisping’s middleweight title will go to returning welterweight legend Georges St-Pierre – who has never fought at middleweight before – was most troubling for two men in particular: Yoel Romero and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. With Octagon records of 8-0 and 7-1 respectively, Romero and Jacare are far and away the top contenders in the UFC middleweight division, and are both very much deserving of the opportunity to fight for gold. Yet with the news of this Bisping vs. St-Pierre bout, both of their title shots were pushed back on the schedule.

While an official date for Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre has yet to be announced, the UFC has officially announced that former welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre will be returning to the UFC later this year to fight UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping for the middleweight strap. While fight fans are rather excited for the booking, as former middleweight champion Chris Weidman pointed out, the fight holds up the rest of the middleweight division quite a bit.

This year, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping will step into the Octagon to fight former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre in a highly anticipated middleweight title fight. While there has been no official date set for the fight, UFC President Dana White has revealed that the two will fight sometime this year. Interestingly enough, White also stated prior to the Bisping vs. St-Pierre booking that Yoel Romero would be the next contender to the middleweight title. Now, with Romero left waiting to potentially fight the winner of Bisping vs. St-Pierre, former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman believes that the fight is holding up the division.

Yoel Romero now plans to wait for shot at Bisping-GSP winner

Tom Taylor - March 15, 2017

Yoel Romero has earned a shot at Michael Bisping’s UFC middleweight title – that’s pretty much undeniable at this point. Unfortunately, Romero’s title shot was put on the back-burner by the UFC, as the organization instead opted to give the next middleweight shot to returning welterweight legend Georges St-Pierre. On Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, Romero weighed in on this bothersome situation, telling host Ariel Helwani that he’d be interested in an interim title fight with Anderson Silva as a way to stay busy while he waits for the Bisping vs. St-Pierre winner.

A massive UFC middleweight title fight is scheduled to take place between the champion Michael Bisping and former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, who is coming off more than a three-year break from fighting. This will be Bisping’s second title defense as he became champion at UFC 199 by defeating Luke Rockhold and then making his first successful title defense against Dan Henderson at UFC 204.

Anderson Silva calls out Michael Bisping and Nick Diaz

Tom Taylor - March 13, 2017

Anderson Silva’s narrow UFC 208 defeat of Derek Brunson marked his first win since an October 2012 defeat of Stephan Bonnar. This win served to keep his status as a top-flight middleweight alive. It also set him up for more big fights in the ever competitive UFC middleweight division. Silva seems to have two opponents in mind to that end. The first is Stockton, California’s Nick Diaz, who has not fought since 2015, when he lost a decision to Silva in a fight that was ruled a no-contest after he tested positive for marijuana metabolites and Silva tested positive for several more significant banned substances. The other is England’s Michael Bisping, who currently holds the UFC middleweight title and is scheduled to defend that title against returning welterweight great Georges St-Pierre later this year. Back in 2016, Silva and Bisping battled for five frenzied rounds, with Bisping ultimately walking away with a controversial decision win.

Robert Whittaker not bothered by GSP-Bisping booking, offers prediction for the fight

Tom Taylor - March 12, 2017

When the UFC brass ironed out their differences with former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, and pencilled him in for an immediate middleweight title shot against divisional king Michael Bisping, their hope was clearly for a positive reception. Unfortunately for them, this booking has been met with plenty in the way of backlash, as its been criticized by fighters like Yoel Romero and Kelvin Gastelum, MMA personalities like Joe Rogan, and of course, the sport’s ever-passionate fans. Not everyone, however, is bent out of shape over this booking. Streaking middleweight contender Robert Whittaker, for example, has adopted a laissez faire outlook on the whole ordeal. In a recent interview with BJPenn.com’s Tom Taylor, Whittaker explained that he’s not particularly bothered by the booking, and that he hopes it produces the massive payday both Bisping and St-Pierre are looking for.  He even admitted that he’s excited to watch the fight.

Kelvin Gastelum criticizes GSP's middleweight title shot: what’s the point of having rankings?

Tom Taylor - March 12, 2017

At a to-be-determined date later this year, former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will return from a hiatus of several years to a shot at middleweight champion Michael Bisping. While news of this St-Pierre comeback was exciting for many fans, however, it was a bit of a buzzkill for the many hard-working contenders in the middleweight division – contenders like Kelvin Gastelum, who surged into title contention with a first-round knockout of Vitor Belfort in Brazil last night. Shortly after his defeat of Belfort, Gastelum weighed in on St-Pierre’s line-jumping middleweight title fight, expressing his opinion that it tarnishes the legitimacy of divisional rankings and contendership.

The sport vs. money fight matchups will be argued time and time again, especially after bouts such as Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre are announced by the UFC. With contenders climbing their way up the rankings their entire careers only to be leapfrogged by a more popular star that will sell a fight more, UFC commentator Joe Rogan understands why money fights are being booked ahead of the sport ranking system. However, that doesn’t mean Rogan is fully supportive of the championship matches being arranged.

It was all lined up for Yoel Romero to get his shot at UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping in his next title defense. However, that all crumbled right before “The Soldier of God’s” eyes when Georges St-Pierre came to an agreement with the UFC to compete again and the former welterweight champion was announced as Bisping’s next opponent. Romero spoke to FloCombat with the help of a translator about the UFC booking Bisping vs. St-Pierre and the Olympic silver medalist said it is all just a matter of time for him.
