Coach John Kavanagh: Conor McGregor isn't going anywhere soon

Tom Taylor - March 29, 2017

Last November, in the main event of the blockbuster UFC 205, Ireland’s Conor McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight title. Given that he still owned the UFC featherweight crown at the time, this made him the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes at the same time. With this history-making win, the Irishman realized new and unprecedented heights of stardom, and maintained his status as the biggest name in MMA. Since this massive win, however, McGregor’s focus has been far from MMA. Instead, he’s been transfixed on an ultra-lucrative boxing bout with undefeated star Floyd Mayweather.

McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh, however, would prefer to see his student stick to mixed martial arts. In a recent interview with Submission Radio, Kavanagh outlined his preferred next steps for his star pupil.

John Kavanagh sounds off on Anthony Pettis missing weight

bjpenndotcom - December 9, 2016

Friday morning, unfortunate news surfaced that former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis had missed weight for his scheduled UFC 206 interim featherweight title fight with Max Holloway. Pettis, who missed weight by three pounds for the event, is no longer eligible to win the interim featherweight championship in the fight, and also forfeited 20% of his purse to Holloway. This of course stirred up quite a bit of controversy given that former UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor was forced to relinquish his featherweight championship in order for the UFC to make the fight between Holloway and Pettis an interim featherweight championship fight, with Jose Aldo subsequently being promoted to the undisputed featherweight champion.

Coach Kavanagh explains why stripping Conor McGregor of FW title was a "ridiculous" move by UFC

Tom Taylor - November 29, 2016

Earlier this month, in the main event of UFC 205, Conor McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight title. Because he already owned the UFC featherweight title, this defeat of Alvarez made him the first fighter in UFC history to hold belts in two divisions simultaneously. Just weeks later, shortly after the UFC 206 main event got cancelled, the UFC announced that the card’s Max Holloway vs. Anthony Pettis co-main event would be for the interim featherweight title, and that Jose Aldo had been promoted from interim champion to undisputed champion. This, of course, meant that McGregor had been stripped of the featherweight belt – or as they put it, he’d “relinquished” it.
