UFC 298 Results: Merab Dvalishvili defeats Henry Cejudo (Highlights)

Cejudo (16-3 MMA) will enter the contest looking to rebound, this after suffering a split decision loss to Aljamain Sterling in a fight for the promotion’s 135lbs strap last May in New Jersey. Prior to that setback, ‘Triple C’ had strung together six straight victories, which included stoppage wins over Dominick Cruz, Marlon Moraes and TJ Dillashaw.

Meanwhile, Merab Dvalishvili (16-4 MMA) will enter tonight’s bout sporting a nine-fight winning streak, his most recent being a lopsided decision victory over former title holder Petr Yan. Seven of the Georgian’s last eight wins have come by way of decision.

Round one of this men’s bantamweight bout begins and Henry Cejudo lands a low kick to start. Merab Dvalishvili throws a spinning high kick that misses. ‘Triple C’ leaps into the pocket with a left hand. Dvalishvili with a nice right hand up the middle. Cejudo with a good low kick. The fighters exchange shots in the pocket and a left hand from Cejudo wobbles ‘The Machine’. Merab Dvalishvili smiles and appears to be ok. He comes forward and lands a low kick. Dvalishvili shoots in and scores a takedown. Henry Cejudo scrambles right back to his feet but eats a right hand in the process. Another good exchange and ‘Triple C’ winds up taking top position on the canvas. Cejudo with some good ground and pound while working from half guard. Henry moves to Merab’s back and lands some decent right hands. Dvalishvili scrambles back up to his feet, but Cejudo still has his back. Henry with some good knees to the thigh of the Georgian. The fighters break and Henry Cejudo lands a nice right hand. The horn sounds to end round one.

Round two begins and Merab Dvalishvili looks to come forward early. He throws out a couple of front kicks that fall short. Both men with good low kicks. Henry Cejudo briefly gets the back of ‘The Machine’ but it doesn’t last long. Dvalishvili is back on the attack now. He lands a good right hand over the top. Cejudo returns fire with a good left. Merab rocks the former champ with a big combination. This is a great fight. Dvalishvili shoots in and scores a big takedown. Two minutes remain in the round. Cejudo scrambles back up to his feet but is quickly taken back down. Henry gets back up to his feet. He appears to be tiring. Merab Dvalishvili locks up a choke but is unable to score the finish before the horn sounds to end round two.

The third and final round begins and Merab Dvalishvili spins and misses with a high kick. Henry Cejudo lands a nice right hand up the middle. He comes forward with a low kick and then a 1-2. ‘The Machine’ responds with a nice combination and then forces the clinch. He pushes ‘Triple C’ up against the cage and begins to work some nice knees. Cejudo breaks free and lands a hard low kick. Merab shoots for a takedown, but Cejudo is able to defend. Another nice combination from Merab Dvalishvili. He shoots in again and this time picks ‘Triple C’ up and slams him to the floor. Good knees and punches from ‘The Machine’. Cejudo gets back up to his feet. He looks for a late takedown of his own, but can’t get it.
